GOP bigwigs put the screws on a Virginia delegate mocking John Kerry's war record last night after Rep. Charles Rangel, a Democrat, blew up at the Republican convention and demanded that President Bush put a stop to the attacks.Morton Blackwell, a GOP activist from Virginia, was distributing bandages with purple hearts on them over the message: "It was just a self-inflicted scratch, but you see I got a Purple Heart for it."
Kerry won three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star in Vietnam.
National GOP leaders first said they knew nothing of the bandages, which popped up on the arms and faces of delegates at the convention last night.
Rangel, at the convention for a TV appearance, called an impromptu press conference with frowning Republicans around him, said Democratic National Committee spokesman Matt Bennett. "He demanded that President Bush put a stop to this outrageous and disgraceful behavior," said Bennett.
GOP Chairman Ed Gillespie later said he spoke to Blackwell and no more bandages would be handed out.

Unbelievable!
We watched on Sunday as thousands of people carried signs calling Bush a Liar, comparing him to Hitler, etc.
A few Repubs wear Bandaids and Rangel's upset!
The "cry baby" seal...we need the "cry baby" seal of the DNC!

After which Rangel promptly gave a CNN interview in which he trashed the "draft dodgers" in the National Guard and spent considerable time rehashing the unproven allegations against GWB's record.
A truly disgraceful performance.

I found this place last week when I was thinking of having John Kerry Purple Heart band aids made up to sell and give the profits to the Swift Boat Vets. I thought of just white bandages with John Kerry and a purple heart printed on them. The lead time is a little long, but still enough time before the election if you hurry.

People, this stuff is preaching to the choir and runs an absolutely needless risk of generating our own backlash.
The point has been made. His self declared war hero status has had the self declared portion emphasized. There is NOTHING for us to gain from a risk/reward perspective in continuing to belabor the point.
It is about winning. If you convince yourself it is about something else we risk undoing everything. If we generate our own backlash among the middle and lose, then he is not punished, then he persuades himself he is vindicated for his actions and then we look in the mirror and know for 4 years that our silliness of a bandaid cost the election.
Let the swiftvets carry this ball. They should cut back their ad production to avoid backlash, and to increase hype for the next. Two more will suffice, one for each remaining month.

Yep the GOP does have a "French" streak in them when it comes to politics.
