My huge vanity post, on the CBS fake Killian memos!
Me | 9/09/04 | Me

Posted on 09/09/2004 12:26:11 PM PDT by Oblongata

I have to just take a minute to do some bragging here. I apologize in advance.

Last night I was reading FR as this story broke. I submitted a tip on the drudgereport page, and sent this email to drudge at 2:42am :

The documents CBS supplied recently are written in a PROPORTIONALLY SPACED font.

If you can figure out how Lt. Col. Jerry Killian managed to produce a document like that, on a typewriter in 1972, I would like to hear it.

The only typewriter capable of proportional fonts at the time, was an IBM Executive. Secretaries had to go to school to learn how to use these. Each line had to be typed twice. They cost a fortune.

In other words, this is not the typewriter a Lt. Col. would use to type a personal memo.

Regards,

Oblongata "

I also mentioned the superscript feature in the May 4th memo in the submitted tip.

This just proves the power of FR and the internet. None ofthis would have been possible without the dedicated work of all you FReepers. We must keep the poressure on!

My wife worked at Fort Ord in Monterey, Ca in 1968, she used an IBM Executive and we bought a used one to have at home.

The carbon "ribbon" was a permanent recording of everything typed as the carbon fully transferred to the paper on impact; Old Elephant Ears was its nickname.

There's no way you could type a th as one character with an Executive unless it was actually part of the type font hard-wired into the typewriter.

But it was. And samples have been posted by a FReeper. This is a non-issue.

I remember it was bigger than a regular Selectric and had a built-in computer that would not type at the same speed as I typed into it.

They didn't have built in computers in 72. Typerighters didn't have proportional fonts.

$11,000 for this machine in the early '70s.

Isn't that two or three Corvette's worth of typewriter, in 1972? Just looking for perspective.

With all due respect, I do not believe IBM made a typewriter in 1972 that could produce proportional type.

The 'Executive' Model was introduced in 1951 and was an electro-mechanical "moving carriage and typebar" style machine. The Selectric was introduced in 1961 and was a fixed carriage, spinning ball machine. Neither could, by the nature of mechaical limitations, produce proportional type. The Selectric II, introduced in 1971, allowed the user to mechanically choose EITHER 10 or 12 pitch type - two choices of fixed spacing in characters per inch, but not proportional.

I googled IBM typewriter and found this link on entry number 6,

Office Machines Americana

where one can purchase reprints of the original manuals for all IBM typewriters.

Any freeper up to some original research?

Pretty good on short notice. A better argument than bogus claims that a well-known typewriter didn't exist.

Let's drop the typewriter claim and demand to see the original documents.

We didn't own any Corvettes, but our Lincoln Mark IV was $17,000 back then.

I don't care anymore; the entire internet has it; let CBS defend themselves. You never know what we may find out.

>>>Right now I am flying Sky High. FR Rules!!<<<

Congratulations - if your analysis holds up under scrutiny, it will cause huge damage to the Democrats and their relationship with the press. Hopefully it will cause damage to the MSM itself and further weaken their creditability. Long overdue!

However, I doubt that your uncovering Democrat Party forgery will have any permanent effect in getting them to play the political game straight up, fair and square.

They seem to take each proof of their duplicity in stride and turn right around and do it again.

Stay on your toes!
