My huge vanity post, on the CBS fake Killian memos!
Me | 9/09/04 | Me

Posted on 09/09/2004 12:26:11 PM PDT by Oblongata

I have to just take a minute to do some bragging here. I apologize in advance.

Last night I was reading FR as this story broke. I submitted a tip on the drudgereport page, and sent this email to drudge at 2:42am :

The documents CBS supplied recently are written in a PROPORTIONALLY SPACED font.

If you can figure out how Lt. Col. Jerry Killian managed to produce a document like that, on a typewriter in 1972, I would like to hear it.

The only typewriter capable of proportional fonts at the time, was an IBM Executive. Secretaries had to go to school to learn how to use these. Each line had to be typed twice. They cost a fortune.

In other words, this is not the typewriter a Lt. Col. would use to type a personal memo.

Regards,

Oblongata "

I also mentioned the superscript feature in the May 4th memo in the submitted tip.

This just proves the power of FR and the internet. None ofthis would have been possible without the dedicated work of all you FReepers. We must keep the poressure on!

I read this blog for about a month, then joined on. Since that time SO MANY STORIES have been broken wide open...

My thanks to all FReepers, may God Bless You All.

>>> I feel guilty like I'm taking to much credit here.<<<

Don't - you're not! The point is that there are thousands of us that didn't contact Drudge - perhaps a few did. At the very least your in a very select group of very smart activists.

Heck - I worked for IBM during the period (not in typewriter division) and the thought didn't even occur to me.

Free Republic rocks! You should be proud!

Thanks for the memories! I, too, worked on that damn machine - what a pain in the neck it was with all the backspacing to correct a small error. I hope the Freepers turn out to be right (what a coup!), but the IBM Executive did not require folks to go to school to learn, as another Freeper reported...

That's a good point. With CBS's past history of editing background images in their own broadcasts, I wouldn't rule this out just yet.

This may be a stupid question. But has anyone checked the military records that Kerry released to see if they're typed in the same manner?

It's okay, this is a HUGE news item.
And CBS &Dan Rather had better cough up where they got the 'memos' or have an extremely good defense.

That's NOT a stupid question.

That's a brilliant question.

Anyone here know how to persue it?

If I were the PA on 60 Minutes and hadn't done this already, I'd guess I would be doing this right now to save Dan Rather's lily-white a**, under orders from the very top.

Now CBS had a ready-made excuse. Anyone in NYC know how you might get a search warrant--QUICK? After all, forgery IS a crime.

I believe I will FAINT dead away if Dan Rather and CBS are held accountable...

After all, the NYT is still operating!

Good job. This is old hat for Kerry. He slandered the heroes who fell in Vietnam. And now he is having his surrogates plant forgeries in a dead man's file. This is beyond the pale.

lol now your talking.

It is just more responsible to ask:

Are these images of the real documents? Because if they are they are fake.

Yeah, the old grey mare scapegoated Jayson Blair for basically their entire operational rationale.

If Danny Boy gets the same treatment, yuo'll know it's bigger than just the memos..

Yes, in fact the IBM Executive which was available in 1972 had both proportional type and the suberscript "th" feature. A FReeper called MineralMan has been explaining this on at least one thread for quite some time today. I think he got fed up with the fact that no one was paying attention to him. Can't say as I blame him.

Anway, these docs could still very well be fake. The little experiment performed by the guy over at the littlegreenfootballs blog is quite interesting.

Folks,It is utterly ridiculous how the so called "Mainstream Media" and press are so biased for John Kerry and the Democrats. They have become so brazen on their liberal stance and for Kerry it is sickening.
It appears the only news media in America that is probably unbiased is Fox and the tabloids that are sold at check out counters in stores. It is strange but most of the muck raking tabloids are probably more unbiased and honest than the so called "Mainstream " bunch.

Sure look at this page. Almost all the documents so far released by both campaigns are available.
