ONE MORE ARGUMENT (CBS Documents)

ONE MORE ARGUMENT

As much as the Kerry Spot has tried to keep up with this, PowerLine has been on top of this story all day long. That site just presented what ought to be the straw that breaks the camel's back:

In the August 18, 1973 memo "discovered" by 60 Minutes, Jerry Killian purportedly writes:

Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job.

But wait! Reader Amar Sarwal points out that General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.

Okay, CBS. The ball's in your court. Explain all this. Make all of this make sense. Don't completely ignore all of this, like you just did on the CBS Evening News.

If CBS ignores this, and gives no counterargument, no defense, then the general public will have no choice but to conclude that the network ran with a hoax - and now refuses to retract a lie.

The FCC should censure CBS news for not reporting factual data... You cannot try to pass yourself off as a news channel and report hoaxes... The American people deserve fair and balanced...

How about the Zip Code in the document.. Would it have changed since 1973 due to Population rises?

Developing Brief Partial Summary of the Forgery Elements of the CBS/Rather Faked letter
Insightful Comments Made by FReepers
=================================================

1-- proportional spacing not generally available
2 -- superscripts not generally available
3 - small "th" single element not generally available
4 - Smart quotes. Curved apostrophes and quotation marks were not available
5-The blurriness of the copy indicates it was recopied dozens of times, tactic of forgers
6--Signature block. Typical authentic military signature block has name, then rank, then on the next line the person's position. This just has rank beneath the name.
7--Margins. These look like a computer's unjustified default, not the way a person typing would have done it.
8 -- Date usually with three letters, or in form as 110471.
9 - words run over consistent with word processor
10 - may be a Times Roman or similar font not generally available then (per Haas Atlas)
11 - signature looks faked
12 - no errors and whiteout
13 - no letterhead
14 - exact match for Microsoft Word Processor
15 - Paper size problem, Air Force and Guard did not use 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper until the 1980s.
16 - Overlap analysis is an exact match
17 - absence of hyphens to split words between lines, c/w 1970's typewriter.
18 - 5000 Longmont #8 in Houston Tx. does not exist
19 - Box 34567 is suspicious, at best. The current use of the po box 34567 is Ashland Chemical Company, A Division of Ashland Oil, Incorporated P. O. Box 34567 Houston
20 - it would have been nearly impossible to center a letterhead with proportional spacing without a computer.
21 - Bush's grade would "normally" be abbreviated "1Lt" not "1st Lt"
22 - Subject matter bizarre
23 - Air Force did not use street addresses for their offices, rather HQ AFLC/CC, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH 45433.
24 - kerning was not available
25 - In the August 18, 1973 memo, Jerry Killian purportedly writes: "Staudt has obviously pressured Hodges more about Bush. I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job." but General Staudt, who thought very highly of Lt. Bush, retired in 1972.
26 - Language not generally used by military
27 - Not signed or initialed
28 - Not in any format that a military person would use, e.g. orders not given by Memo.

"but just because the General retired the year before does not mean he could not lobby or exert influence"

concur --

if he were the type to do so; but it seems he was not.

I also think they are forgeries, but just because the General retired the year before does not mean he could not lobby or exert influence.

If this were private biz, I would tend to agree with you.

But I believe the military has a strong tradition that once you're retired, you get the bleep out of the way and don't interfere.

Military FReepers, feel free to confirm or deny.

agreed, but you have to admit that with the other evidence that is being review that there are too many things that are just not jiving with the time line here.

The typeset typewriter vs. MS 2002 software
General that wrote the fit rep: His son stating that father did not bring work home with him and he had never see any such memo. (Personal account on the sons part, but son also severed in same unit as an officer also.)
Questionable timing of some of the source cited. (General in reference to you statement included.)

But you ask the good questions I will admit, and make a very valid point that just because he retired did not mean that his influence diminished any.

So, let me see if I get this right.
Now, I am not a nuclear physicist. My husband says I am more like a fizzy cyst . . .
If I can figure this out, so can the ordinary "60 Minutes" hogswill swallower . . .

Killian wrote a memo in 1973 referring to the ire of an officer (Staudt) who retired in 1972. Why would a retired officer still be coming to work and running the show after a yeaar.
Hmmmmm..mmmmmmmm?

Sounds like some forger must not have done their homework!
Ya'll don't let "60 MINI NUTS" get away with this if true!!
Surely, Rather, who sees all knows all, would never fall for that sort of . . . POPPYCOCK! oooooooooohhhhh . . .

The only explanation left is that the Killian documents were typed on the same typewriter Kerry brought to Vietnam. :-)

It just keeps getting better and better....and funnier and funnier!

Of course I know what you mean, but I am truly outraged that this was done to discredit the SERVICE record of a President of the United States. And on a dead man's back, a veteran's back, a colonel's back at that!

It is so wrong, so sick and so misleading and truly dispicable that I don't even have the words. If this was a plan to hurt out President on false pretenses....I believe the FCC as well as CONGRESS should get involved.

I am SICK of ABC, NBC and CBS only presenting the news that fits their liberal agendas. Just SICK of it.

They have denied the American people their right to know and replaced it with WHAT THEY WANT THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS to KNOW.

That is immensely F@cKed UP!

In every way.

I resent it. And I truly wish EVERY FREEPER who is angered like I am takes the time to write to CBS and EVERY SINGLE SPONSOR of the 60 minutes program-there is a thread running that lists um all!
