KERRYS PAID JUST 12% IN FEDERAL INCOME TAXES IN 2003
AMERICANS FOR TAX REFORM ^ | SEPTEMBER 8, 2004 | CHRISTOPHER BUTLER

Posted on 09/10/2004 12:19:25 PM PDT by CHARLITE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - John Kerry has repeatedly called for increasing taxes on the "wealthy" so the affluent "pay their fair share" for the "common good." Ironically, John and Theresa Heinz Kerry, who comprise one the richest families in the world, pay relatively little income tax.

Last year, John Kerry and his wife paid just 12% of their combined income in income taxes, despite their assertion that the rich should contribute increased amounts to government coffers. In contrast, President and Mrs. Bush, who had a substantially lower income than the Kerry's, paid over 28% in taxes.

"John Kerry wants other Americans to pay higher taxes while he and his wife manage to pay a rate lower than most of the middle class," said ATR President Grover Norquist. "Apparently, the Kerry's think everyone else should pay higher taxes but them."

In addition to finding loopholes and write-offs to decrease his taxes, John Kerry has declined to pay a small, voluntary tax in his home state. The Massachusetts state income tax code contains a provision allowing payers to contribute an extra .6% of their income to benefit the commonwealth. Kerry has consistently failed to pay the extra money, which would have amounted to $687 dollars last year.

"John Kerry thinks other hardworking Americans should pay more taxes while he and his billionaire wife pay as little as possible," continued Norquist. "The hypocrisy John Kerry shows on his own tax return is not indicative of the character and judgment America needs in our President." Contact: Christopher Butler (202) 785-0266 cbutler@atr.org

I'm for increasing taxes on the rich like Kerry. 15% flat tax for everyone, no loopholes, no deductions.

With a consumption based tax, a well-married guy like Kerry would pay a fair tax on all his yachts, Ducatis and other rich man's toys--but Democrats won't stand for it.

My wife and I paid 25% or so in fed income confiscation taxes last year. Kerry is a lying pig. Period.

I agree. Completely.

Unfortunately, and entire industry has a vested interest in keeping the tax code as Byzantine and impenetrable as possible.

The more convoluted and impossible to understand the tax code is, the better for those folks.

This can be turned into a great debate question. Lets see:

"Mr Kerry, you have often said that the rich, and I assume that includes yourself, should pay their fair share of taxes. In fact, you have made this a centerpiece of your campaign. How come you haven't set an example, and pay only 12% in taxes?"

No, but you'll surely see another hit piece on George Bush's National Guard service, or on how rotten things are in Iraq, or how bad the "Bush Economy" is.....

Or you can do what I do: don't watch them. (I feel great, and my permanent headache's gone!)

Isn't that an outrage! No wonder Kerry thinks he should be paying more in taxes. He should!

If I were Bush, I wouldn't do one of these damn debates stocked with left-wing MSM types. I would get an equal number of well known conservatives on the panel or otherwise forget the freakin debates!

Kerry is the walking, breathing definition of a Limousine Liberal. He's beyond parody. I wonder how many windsurf boards, motorcycles and fancy skeet guns he bought last year with that .6%.

This is just more proof that everything he says is campaign rhetoric.
