I am trying to create a back-up of my hard drive (CD or floppy) in anticipation of some maintenance work on my laptop. I cannot find where to begin initiating the back-up process. I have linked to the MS web page that concerns my problem.
My problem, specifically, is that I cannot find the Backup "tab" to click in my System Tools folder, as told to do so on the MS help page. It simply does not exist. I'm stumped.
i thought this was going yo be, "i'm trying to make a document in windows xp that really, really looks like it came from the 1970s. the ones i made i thought looked pretty good, but apparently not and now some people are in a lot of trouble and might lose their jobs." but then i realised that this isn't the dnc email network.
Start>Program>Accessories>System tools>Backup?
http://www.karenware.com to download and install Replicator. It is much better than the backup program provided by MS.
Start/Run type ntbackup click OK
Use Search to find the System Tools folder.
It's my understanding that you have to have the MS XP CD. I have the same problem with my desktop...only it didn't come with the CD. I'll be back with a link.
"Start>Program>Accessories>System tools>Backup?"
FWIW, I'm not getting a choice for "backup"
XP Home edition does not install Backup by default. You will need to find a way to manually install it from the CD, or get some other kind of backup program.
buy a 200 gig external hard drive (about 200 dollars)
plug it into your usb
use windows explorer and drop and drag your entire hard drive to the external one
It may take overnite to copy
Use Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost for a perfect backup copy
I was going to upgrade - full install - XP on my W98(original!) machines but since I don't have any problems, I think I'll let sleeping MicrosSoft dogs alone.

I will add this: if you own a copy of Norton System Works or something by Symantec, see if you have a copy of Norton Ghost on it. Ghost is the best thinkg for backing up a drive.
The backup program is probably still there, but somehow the shortcut got removed. See if you've got the file windows\system32\ntbackup.exe and double-click on it if you do. That should open the backup program.
This sounds like a good opportunity to do a fresh, clean install of XP that will help your computer run like new again.
All you really need to do is backup your data and then completely reformat your hard drive. Then install XP (or your computer's restore software) so that it is just like the day you bought it. Then download and apply all the critical Windows updates. Then install and update a good anti-virus program.
Then you can reload your applications from the original disks. You might find that some applications you bought over the years, you don't even need or want anymore. The less you load on, the faster and cleaner your system will run.
Then simply restore your data and you are all set!
