Arizona Poll: Bush leads 53%-38% - race nearly over pollster says

PHOENIX -- President Bush has a lead in Arizona that is probably insurmountable over Democratic challenger John Kerry, according to a newly released statewide poll. The latest survey shows Kerry running 11 points behind Bush with only five weeks left in the campaign. And among those most likely to cast ballots this year, the president's lead hits 15 points -- with only 8 percent undecided.

"I've never seen anybody overcome that kind of a lead in Arizona,'' said pollster Bruce Merrill who conducted the survey within the last week for KAET-TV, the Phoenix PBS affiliate. "I think it's awfully close to being over in Arizona,'' he added, pointing out that Bush has had strong numbers here for months.

Well, not that we didn't know that, but it's still encouraging.

There is some evidence now that Senator Kerry is still competitive in PA but only two points ahead of the President in MI.

If the President can lock down PA and force Senator Kerry to fight to keep a lead in MI this is a great development.

Evidently it's because "A State doesn't equal a whole State", or something like that...

Just another one of those many NM imponderables.

Az has 6M people and NM less than 2M.

In NM there are three Democrat-leaning groups that have much more clout than in AZ.

In NM Hispanics and Indians are respectively 22% and 10% of the population, while in AZ they are respectively 11% and 5%.

In NM the white urban population is full of limousine liberals in towns like Albuquerque, Santa Fe and hippy resort areas like Taos. These voters are quite liberal.

REMEMBER!!!!!

(1) IT AIN'T OVER 'TILL IT'S OVER!!!!

(2) RATS LIE, CHEAT and STEAL ELECTIONS!!!!

(3) RATS HAVE REGISTERED FIVE TIMES MORE "PEOPLE" IN PA, OHIO AND FL THAN REPUBLICANS!!!!

(There's no word yet as to how many new RAT voters are alive, well and human vs. how many live underground at local cemetaries or bark or purr.)

Another difference is that there is no ocean-front property in New Mexico.

Since 1952, Arizona has cast its electoral votes 12 times for the Republican candidate and only once for the Democrat (1996), while New Mexico has gone Republican 8 times and Democrat 5 times. In 2000 Gore carried New Mexico by less than 400 votes (so voter fraud may have made the margin of victory).

The race isn't over. The Rats are still registering voters, including the dead, dying and non-existent. See the latest here:

That and an unseasonable heavy snowfall that left the conservative eastern part of the state snowbound while barely touching the Dim areas.

Thanks for this understandable explanation. NM is a beautiful state, and the aroma of roasting hatch peppers in the air in autumn is heavenly. It's a shame it's populated with so many Gimmies and Guilties.
