XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN OCT 03, 2004 14:05:38 ET XXXXX

DEBATE MYSTERY: DID KERRY HAVE CHEAT SHEET?

Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:

"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."

So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?

What did Kerry place on the podium?

Video replays of the Kerry maneuver played all weekend long on the internet.

[A tight zoom of the Boston.Com feed shows Kerry pulling a mysterious "card" from his jacket. 14 seconds into video, after commerical]

A top Kerry campaign source explained to the DRUDGE REPORT late Sunday how Bush supporters were once again trying to distract.

"Kerry did not cheat," said the Kerry insider. "This is more lies from Republicans, who are hoping for a quick change of subject away from the president's performance, and the new polls."

He answered quite a few questions with facts and figures. In my estimation, there are only four possibilities:

1. The man has an incredible ability to memorize details, and is clairvoyant enough to anticipate the questions.
2. He brought notes on the points he hoped to make.
3. He knew the questions in advance.
4. He knew the questions in advance and brought notes to support his pre-planned answers.

Drudge changes his story - now says zoom shows mysterious object not "card" as he originally said.

I can just see it now - just before Kerry goes on stage Carvile hands Kerry some cheat notes and says sneak these out, knowing he would be caught - hence hiltery in 08

What about a handkerchief? I don't know why he'd put that on the lectern - and it wouldn't have been okay, in any case - but I'm just playing devil's advocate and trying to think of other things it could have been. (In the Globe video, it sure looked like a piece of paper to me, too.)

Conspiracy Theory #1: I urge my fellow FReepers to remember the brouhaha that arose from the Kerry campaign over the lights. It was widely reported that one of the Kerry campaign members even got into a shouting match with a debate overseer over this issue. Yet given the fact that Kerry possessed an unprecendented amount of smoothness and timeliness that night, I find myself wondering what they were worried about. John Kerry seemed very calm, collected, and extremely prepared during the debate. If this was the case all along, would not those who were closest to Kerry realize that they had absolutely nothing to worry about?

A-ha! The fact is, the Kerry campaign was FRANTIC. Thus, Kerry and his good lib buddy, Lehrer, had lunch that afternoon. There Lehrer, a crooked liberal who was desperate to unseat George W. Bush, provided Kerry with the questions that he was planning on asking that night, knowing that no one would question him on it because everyone knows that only Lehrer was supposed to know about the questions. It was the perfect conspiracy -- it had no loopholes and it was completely fool-proof. Or so they thought...

I don't think it was a card. He appeard to be smoothing something out. It would have been something less obvious than a card. A small piece of paper folded up would have been less conspicuous.

A diversion. Yes, I think that explains it. If you watch the handshake carefully, Bush starts to break away, but Kerry wouldn't let go of his hand. All eyes are on Bush making himself look a foolish while Kerry focuses on getting out his notes.

I've been following your resistance to the facts of this story. I was wondering myself what part of "NO NOTECARDS" you were having difficulty with.

Let me make this clear so the those with less brain capacity can understand. THIS IS A MESSAGE BOARD. NOT a CHAT channel. You see I can reply to someone saying what were the rules. Then 70 people can reply saying that no notes were allowed. Now here's the tricky part, I may not have refreshed my screen by the time those 70 people posted their response. So then I can comment to someone else saying I really don't know what the rules were. Then when I actually get a chance to read the rules because someone thoughtfully posted a link to the rules, then the question is answered. Also since this is a message board and not a chat channel it should be easy for people to follow all my comments, so that someone posting a reply at around the 300 comment mark to comment #5 (acting like an ass) doesn't come across too well. If you need help understanding messageboards freepmail me and I'll explain them in more detail.

They were supposed to be. The candidates were instructed to bring nothing but themselves to the podium.

Precisely! Everything these days is shot at vastly higher resolution for archive than normal broadcast mediums will support. You can pull surprising detail out of archive that wouldn't seem possible judging from broadcast footage.

For example, Janet Jackson's nipple.

I must admit, that shot was the first illustration I saw of how much magnification the newfangled video formats support. If the debate was shot on that quality, it might almost be possible to read what was on Kerry's paper if the writing wasn't on the inside.
