Lynne Cheney Responds to Kerry's Remarks After Debate

Vice President's Wife Accuses Kerry of 'Tawdry Political Trick' in Mentioning Mary Cheney's Homosexuality

By Michael Laris Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, October 13, 2004; 11:42 PM

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa., Oct. 13 -- Lynne V. Cheney, wife of Vice President Cheney, accused John F. Kerry Wednesday night of "a cheap and tawdry political trick" and said he "is not a good man" after he brought up their daughter's homosexuality at the final presidential debate.

Mary Cheney, one of the vice president's two daughters and an official of the Bush-Cheney campaign, has been open about her lesbian status. The candidates were asked if they believe homosexuality is a choice, and Bush did not mention Mary Cheney. Then Kerry said, "If you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as."[snip]

[snip]

...Lynne Cheney issued her post-debate rebuke to a cheering crowd outside Pittsburgh. "The only thing I can conclude is he is not a good man. I'm speaking as a mom," she said. "What a cheap and tawdry political trick."....'

Page A6 of tomorrow's Washington Post. Should have been A1 above the fold, but better than nothing.

he "is not a good man"
As good a summation as any.

He thought he could get away with it as a pandering move. One too many name-drops for Lurch.

"You said "turd"

There are some words that just sort of naturally come to mind when talking about John F'n that one wouldn't normally use in polite conversation.

Also, on Fox, when Carl Cameron asked if this type of statement was appropriate, Kerry's campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill said that Cheney's daughter was [exact quote] "fair game"

And here I thought that the height of Democratic Party political correctness was "don't ask, don't tell." I guess when a policitially correct democrat has a way to embaris a republican, "don't ask, don't tell" becomes "out them publicly and ridicule them."

Hmmmmmmmm....to the Dem's any lie, any slime, any distortion, is fair game during an election campaign. Shame on them.

I wonder how the MSM and Kerry himself will spin this... probably by mentioning it again and again.

Thanks for the edification. I had a mentally challenged and physically challenged relative once upon a time. I absolutely hated when people picked on him. He couldn't help his condition. Willfully ignorant mean-spirited people on the other hand ... they're deficient by choice, and therefore have no excuse.

The commotion is that John Kerry is not an intimate of Dick Cheney's daughter, not personally close with her and she is not a public figure. How about his democrat colleague in the house Barney Franks, why didn't he use him to make his 'compassionate' comment?

This will NEVER be anything in the MSM, never. Now let's pretend the discussion is some liberal position of Kerry and his daughter were actually a conservative. President Bush: "I know that Senator Kerry's daughter loves him deeply, but she does not support his position on gay marriage" Need we even mention what the MSM would have done?

I believe if you try to call them on it [which I am going to do if I do NOT see this in the MSM], their response will be 'it's a personal matter that should be handled by the Cheney's.    B*strds.

"Kerry goes for the opponent's family. Actually drags them into the debate! I do believe he's crossed a line here that's never been crossed.

This one almost surprises me."

It is interesting that Kerry and Edwards almost can't help themselves in bringing their opponents family into the debate. I think it is an attempt to intimidate someone. It has been done in three of the four debates with regularity and there is a certain sameness to the approach.

Kerry brought up Bush's daughters in the first debate. Bush was gracious in return. Edwards brought up Cheney's daughter in the VP debate. Cheney was subtle but firm. Cheney made a brief comment and did not follow up. The shortness of his response and the passing on of his time was a subtle rebuff of Edwards IMHO.

Kerry's comment tonight was the crassest yet. These are not gaffes. It is psychological warfare calculated to intimidate their opponent and to assume a familiarity that is not theirs to assume. It is the same as the crassness of a loud drunk who only speaks increasingly louder and more offensive at a party. Each mention of a family member has moved further and further into the private circle of the opponent's family. It strikes me as calculated.

Neither Bush or Cheney have even brought up Kerry or Edwards' family of course.

I'm sure you're just asking a rhetorical question, right? You want to know what's wrong with Kerry mentioning Cheney's daughter's homosexuality. Well listen up:

Here's the money quote: "Kerry said, "I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not choice."

Not only did Kerry unnecessarily bring up an opponent's family member, which is always a no no, he professed to tell viewers what she would say about her sexuality. Good God, that's so politically incorrect, I can't even begin to discuss it without spitting nails.!! What if Bush had made up a comment on what the Kerry daughters might say about being the offspring of an annulled marriage? Or..what if Bush said..."I think that if you asked the Kerry girls about the risk of smoking, they would tell you they only smoke on dates with Ben Affleck, not all the time.

Or what if Bush had said, "In America, we have freedom of religion, and even though Teresa Heinz Kerry's oldest son is a practicing zen Bhuddist, I'm sure he would tell you he still believes in God."

As Joe Scarborough said, even local politicians running for county commissioner, know better than to take cheap shots at candidates by mentioning the actions of their offspring that might cause some voters to vote against them.

Lynn Cheney is right to protest Kerry and Edwards trying to use her daughter's sexuality for political gain. I'm glad she spoke up ferociously tonight.

Now read Kerry's quote again. You can plainly see Kerry coould have made his point without mentioning Cheney's daughter. It was an intentional effort to turn off the Christian evangelical vote.

Yes, Edwards did it too, but at least her father was there to respond. This is a bit more low.
