In the controversy over Sen. John Kerry's service in Vietnam, Americans have heard from Kerry, from the crew of the Navy Swift boats he commanded, and from other Swift boat veterans who question the official account of a 1969 incident for which Kerry was awarded a Silver Star. But there is one group they have not heard from: the Vietnamese who were there that day.
According to the military citation, Kerry was awarded the medal for his actions during an intense firefight on Feb. 28, 1969, during which he shot and killed a Viet Cong fighter who was armed with a rocket launcher. Members of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group have charged that the Viet Cong fighter was a teenager who was alone, who was not part of a numerically superior force, and who was already wounded and running away when Kerry shot him.

Nightline will be doing Vietnam in a pre-election pursuit for ratings. Get to eat some good hot steaming pho and other great Viet food. Then come home and spin for Kerry.
Sure is awfully while for someone 10 degrees north of the equator.
while = white
Back to a time 35 years ago in a country racked with war to find out from villagers about one incident on a river that is "seared" into the memories like nothing else. For 35 years, they have waited in the hopes that an ABC news crew would come there and interview them. Of course, airing this segment leaves others little time to verify the accuracy of any report. Thirty-five years ago, I was twenty-seven and remember events, but not well enough to construct elaborate details about them. And I was not living in a country in the throes of war.
Am I being overly suspicious of ABC?
They dispute the swiftboat claims.
Hummmm? He didn't marry his 1st heiress until 1970 --- they Honeymooned in Paris visiting the Viet Cong as I recall.
What's up?
Kerry was in Vietnam? I didn't know...
Nightline traveled to Vietnam and found a number of witnesses who have never been heard from before, and who have no particular ax to grind for or against Kerry.
Both ABC and the communist government of Viet Nam would like to see Hanoi John elected. This is hardly nonpartisan.
Thank you ABC for spending the money and resources to wsend a crew to Vietnam and find these villagers that remember the VERY DAY that Kerry served as an American War Hero.
ABC, could you PLEASE spend an equal amount of resources in getting Kerry to sign Form 180 and get his military records released so that th epublic can see for themselves what a traitor Kerry is?
They've already changed the caption. No more "wedding ring."
The Vietnamese government initially rejected Nightline's request to visit the village, saying they did not want to somehow influence the U.S. presidential election. Once Nightline explained that the intention was to simply find out what the Vietnamese people remember and think of what happened there, permission was granted.

Yeah, right thats the ticket. With my girlfriend morgan fairchild.....
ABC wouldn't have coached these "witnesses" or paid them or anything.
I think it means those items are his "lucky charms" now, notwithstanding the quote is accompanied by a photo from 1969. I doubt anyone was interviewing him in 1969 about those types of things.
He was on a boat or something.
It's a little know fact and probably will not be a factor in the election.
