Note: On Thursday night, an antiwar protestor in Milwaukee spit on a returned Iraqi war veteran, Marine Major Jerry Boyle. Boyle is a Republican candidate for Congress in Milwaukee. Boyle served in Operation Iraqi freedom and was posted to Baghdad shortly after the invasion. Although he is an underdog in the race, he has shown up for every campaign forum, where he's won high marks for his civility and willing to face hostile audiences...
On my show this morning, Boyle described himself as "livid" over the incident, but had restrained himself from responding in any way...
Here's the story as relayed to me by one of his campaign aides:
Charlie:
I would like to relay to you a disturbing and unsettling incident which happened tonight at the Alverno College debate between Gwen Moore and Jerry Boyle.
Boyle has attended every debate and forum he has been invited to, even ones where it has not been the friendliest of audiences receptive to his Republican message.
Last night's debate at Alverno College was one attended by mostly people which will not vote for him in next month's election, but was a well run and fair debate none the less.
The questions were pointed and thoughtful and the answers were equally to the point. The topics ranged from foreign policy to the economy. The stark contrast between Moore and Boyle was pretty clear to those in the audience. Boyle was to the point and made it evident that although his was not the most popular opinion in the room, this is what he believed in.
Many people approached him following the debate to discuss the topics and their views and several said although they did not agree with his stance, commended him on making great arguments and being forthright in his presentation.
One man, unfortunately took the opportunity to ruin the evening.
As Boyle was walking from the stage to the reception, a graduate student from UWM spit on Boyle as he passed by.
Boyle, restraining himself, went to the restroom to clean up let this incident go.
I, however, did not.
After seeing Jerry wipe the spit from his jacket, I asked him what was going on and asked the young man why he spit on him.
Although it was witnessed by several people (at least five) he denied it and approached me looking for a confrontation. He walked up to me and got right in my face.
I asked him why he spit on Jerry and he said he didn't but should have because Jerry didn't answer his question to his satisfaction.
He called me an imperialistic pig and said that I was a puppet for an imperialistic regime. I asked him if that was a new term he had just learned in school and that I was very proud of him for using it in a complete sentence.
To make a long story short, after a little more verbal back and forth, he was ushered away by his teacher and escorted from the building.
My point is this. Are we now at a time when, even at a debate with dissenting views have the right to spit on each other?
Will he go home and brag to his friends that he spit on an Iraqi War veteran?
Is that the culture we live in now? This is not Kerry vs. Bush, its a small debate at Alverno College on the south side of Milwaukee.
He liked that fact that Gwen Moore is against bunker busting bombs (which she repeated) but will spit in the face of someone who helped liberate a country of 25 million people from a homicidal madman and made the world a safer place in the process.
To their credit, the people at Alverno apologized, but the damage was done.
If there are any liberals listening to your show, please ask them to take a step back and think before they act like this. Political discourse is what our country was formed on, but actions like this are all too common and its time to rein it in.
This was indeed a sad day for Milwaukee and America as a whole.

I would have defended myself "appropriately" and then had the little puke arrested!
If I see someone spit on a returning Vet ... that person WILL lose some teeth ... jail or no jail. I have 31 years of pent up rage from when that happened to me when I returned from Vietnam.

They're not anti-war, just pro-the other side. Kerry meeting the VC in Paris, Jane Fonda in Hanoi, Sean Penn in Baghdad and Michael Moore's praise of the "freedom fighters" and "minutemen" desperately trying to stop the march of democracy in Iraq.
Kerry wants to relive Vietnam; we are only seeing the beginning if he should win.
I did not see where this person claimed to be a Christian.
If he did then he is a liar.
There are a lot of Christians that do support the war.
Anyone can claim to be a Christian but God says you know them" by the fruit they bear".
Spit on a cop sometime if anyone doubts me.
There is also something call Citizen Arrest. Incidents like should not just be let go. Silence is acceptance. The appropriate response is what people did after the Ann Coulter incident. Hold them for the Police (using only the minimum required amount of force + 5% for spite).
Perhaps the spitter has bigger and better plans. He may be planning to one day run for office based on his opposition to the Iraq war.
It reminds me of when my husband, who was a service man, and I lived in Germany in the late 60's, and when it was time to rotate back to the states, we were afraid of coming back here because of all the riots on college campuses and in the streets because of the hatred of servicemen. I don't want our country to ever have to be like that again, and I feel that a Kerry presidency(Barf!) would make it so! RE-ELECT GEORGE W. BUSH!!!!!!
While in Victoria, Canada, my son, in uniform (Navy, USS Lincoln) was enjoying a lunch, sitting on a park bench with some shipmates. A woman for some unknown reason turned, as she walked by, spit at them (did not hit them) and cursed profanities at them.
However, there are also good people in Canada, of course. Two people. both of whom witnessed it, came over to offer apologies and words of support.
But .. when undecideds (who have children in theatre) here how this military man was treated .. I don't think it will win any votes for Kerry.
One would ordinarily conclude that conservatism would become virtually extinct because of the overwhelming presence of liberalism in our schools. But I think what happens is half of the little liberals who have been given phoney self esteem by the liberal "teachers" (who themselves don't really know anything) get out into the real world and find they can't survive out there because they never learned anything useful in the liberal establishments. This reality smack-down causes them to turn to a life of crime, whereupon they then prey on the other half of their former liberal classmates. When these liberal classmates get mugged by their under achieving high-esteem fellows, the newly mugged victim becomes a conservative.
That was funny. A rather descriptive picture of "a conservative is a liberal who got mugged."
I'm sure some of it is quite true, but not very many people get mugged up here, at least not in my neck of the woods.
I suspect conservatism is kept alive (albeit ever so slightly) by diligent parents and THE AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THE BOX THAT SAYS "TAXES DEDUCTED".

Spitting is potentially dangerous and this should have been reported to police.
Kerry is trying to pull another VietNam disgrace on our current troops serving in the WOT. However, he's so stupid he seems to forget 9/11 when America was attacked. And our current military are fighting to save us from further terrorists. And I believe most Americans are aware of this. I work from home where I have a clear view of Route 5 in Central New York State. Sometimes I watch the traffic going by and there are very few cars that don't have a metallic, yellow "Support Our Troops" ribbon on them, including ours. God save America and God Bless our military and God Save America from Kerry.

My friend just smiled at me and said, "Madison is a small island of Socialism surrounded by the rest of Wisconsin, where the adults live."
That said, the bravest man I have ever seen in my life was in Madison, WI. He was a young man walking down the streets this Summer carrying not 1 but 2 Bush signs. He got some nasty looks but he was smiling.
The saving grace about the kids in the schools, is that there is a high degree of inherent B.S. detection with kids these days, and they sniff out all the Liberal nonsense.
My son asked some really tough questions back in H.S. government class, for instance.
