Troops encounter unknown chemical items

As the military advances closer to Baghdad, signs of Iraqichemical preparedness are multiplying, although there is still no conclusive evidence Saddam Hussein's regime possesses weapons of mass destruction.

On Friday, troops at a training facility in the westernIraqi desert came across a bottle labeled "tabun" a nerve gas and chemical weapon Iraq is banned from possessing.

Closer to Baghdad, troops at Iraq's largest militaryindustrial complex found nerve agent antidotes, documents describing chemical warfare and a white powder that appeared to be used for explosives.

U.N. weapons inspectors went repeatedly to the vast al QaQaa complex most recently on March 8 but found nothing during spot visits to some of the 1,100 buildings at the site 25 miles south of Baghdad.

Col. John Peabody, engineer brigade commander of the 3rdInfantry Division, said troops found thousands of 2-by-5-inch boxes, each containing three vials of white powder, together with documents written in Arabic that dealt with how to engage in chemical warfare.

No it doesn't mean that at all. The UN had tagged and sealed the Cemtex explosives in January. When they returned they were looking for WMD not Cemtex which they had already found and sealed. The white powder story is from FOX 18 months ago and nothing ever came of it.I'd think if the white powder was WMD we might have heard about it before this.

Someone better save the web ad that sKerry just put out.

Backdrop it against a voice over of this report. And, throw Kerry under the bus.

When he says, George Bush didn't do this or that, he is talking about our military. He acts as if George Bush is standing a post at the Al Qa Qaa weapons depot, but fell asleep on the job, and insurgents just walked off with 380 tons of weapons.

This is ridiculous. If the American people buy this garbage, we deserve a clown like John Kerry. The MSM deserves to rot.

Charles, I just called the NYT foreign desk to tell them about this. Before I could speak, a woman read a statement to me which claimed the IAEA went in in March 03 and the stuff was still there.

I then read her your bolded paragraph, which states the opposite. She asked for the source, which I gave her.

They must know that we are not going to buy their lies.

Thanks for posting.

Just called and sent this via email to the following addresses at the NYT:

executive-editor@nytimes.com

managing-editor@nytimes.com

public@nytimes.com

The NYT needs to apologize to America, and you need to run a retraction regarding the Iraqi explosives story you ran yesterday.

Once again Dan Rather and CBS News and the New York Times are attempting to manipulate a false story to effect our nation’s elections.

The Iraqi explosives story CBS and the New York Times ran yesterday is a fraud. These weapons were not there when US troops went to this site in 2003. The IAEA and its head, the anti-American Mohammed El Baradei, leaked a false letter on this issue to the media to embarrass the Bush administration.

I’m going to ask the FCC to investigate CBS and the NYT continued egregious actions.

BY nothing, they meant chemical weapons folks. The white powder is the high explosive that the NYT is so up in arms about. Go to Kerry spot and read this article and be informed.........the 'high explosive' the ny times is refering to is not 'plastic' explosive, or even something that you can easily blow up. It is a chemical which, when combined with other chemicals, can be made into things like c-4, etc. This article doesn't prove anything....................this is what the stuff is..............A key point is that this is not dense stuff, where you can get a lot of weight into a small vehicle. If this was really in its raw form, it is white powder, like cornstarch or a light powdered sugar (NOT granulated sugar). Blow on it and it flies in the breeze- the stories I've seen haven't said much about what form it was in, but you would want it to be relatively raw so you could form it into main charges for artillery, etc. They don't pour granules into shells, it is mixed with binders and melted sonit will take a shape. You can't be a nice terrorist, happen by, stick some in your pocket, and run away while the US Army isn't looking- it isn't "plastic" (like, say, comp C4, which is a plastic matrix impregnated with HE, thus has a lot of filler to make it shapeable). The kinds of trucks you would need to haul it are like grain hoppers, and lots of them. You can't stack it on pallets.

As I read it, the article was concerning WMD. They, the IAEA, does not consider explosives to be WMD.

That is the problem with all of this.

I think what we are getting at is the fact this has been known for over a year.

"... I found this gem with a Lexis-Nexis search."

Is it any wonder why the old traditionalist & mainstream news media sued FreeRepublic to keep us from archiving their stories here?

They want to be able to lie and not get caught doing it.

Now now. We all know they moved 380 tons of ammo back into the facility after the UN left. Then it was stolen by a caravan of Bedouin.

Or leprechauns.

Via Czechoslovakia.

Please forward this to the Associated Press who is reporting such silliness as: Possibility raised that explosives had disappeared before U.S. soldiers secured Al-Qaqaa complex

Here's a link to an ASSOCIATED PRESS story from April 5, 2003

U.N. weapons inspectors went repeatedly to the vast al Qa Qaa complex - most recently on March 8 - but found nothing during spot visits to some of the 1,100 buildings at the site 25 miles south of Baghdad.
It is pretty much the same story. I wonder if the NY Times is going to deny the Associated Press as a legitimate source?
