There are six frantic days left until the election, but nearly 1 in 10 likely voters have already cast early ballots and they've backed President Bush by a skinny margin over John Kerry, a tracking poll reports.Among those who say they've already voted by absentee ballot or early ballots in states that allow it 51 percent went for Bush and 47 percent for Kerry, according to ABC's Saturday-Monday survey.
That news comes as most polls show the race is super-close nationally and in key states, so the real battle now is to see which side does a better job of turning out its vote.
Right now, Kerry and Bush are battling hard across the Midwest where Kerry has to defend five states but Bush must defend Ohio while keeping an eye on Nevada, New Mexico and above all Florida, the state where Bush won the White House by 537 votes.

Democrats abruptly poured more than $100,000 into ads for Hawaii after polls showed Bush surging into a tie in a state that Al Gore won by 20 points.
One GOP strategist suggested Hawaii scene of Pearl Harbor may feel more vulnerable to terrorism, the issue that's Bush's strong point, as an isolated outpost far from the U.S. mainland.
Bush is making a hard push in two states that he barely lost in 2000 Wisconsin and Iowa. Bush now tops most polls in those two states.

ignore this "news" folks...vote and work like the margins are 90% for Kerry, 10% for Bush. If all true patriots vote, kerry will lose big time.
Other than Georgia, Texas and Florida, which states have early voting? Are they mainly red states or blue states? The Post article says "western" states.
I suspect this is a universal component of human nature. VOTE!
Tennessee has early voting
Why must Bush keep an eye on New Mexico? He lost it the last time so he can (probably) afford to lose it again.
Bush must keep an eye on NM because he is slightly down in NH.
All the recent polls show Bush up in NM, so it should replace NH nicely.
When did this early voting thing start, anyway? I don't like the smell of it...
If all those who get gubbermint cheese and gubbermint checks vote, then Kerry will win.
Not all states have early voting (we do here in Florida). I like it because you vote at a central location where they have access to updated voter rolls, etc., so I think there is actually less possibility of fraud. However, the votes are not actually counted until Election Day (in Florida, at least), so I guess these surveys are based on exit polls.
Everything about this race says "blowout". 55% coming soon.
Most states have early voting now - red and blue. This is good news for Bush because the Dems are DRAGGING their deadbeats to the polls for early voting.
I could be wrong but I'm getting a sense that Republicans and conservative to moderate Democrats are sick and tired of the current status of the Democratic party. We need to keep fighting this voter fraud that's out there but I believe that the Dems are about to experience a voter backlash that hasn't been seen in quite a while.
Just exit polling.
The true spirit of patriotism is sacraficing for your country when needed. The smallest level of which would be having to wait in line for hours to vote on Tues.
I just don't see the Bush haters sacraficing when faced with a 2-3 hour voting line. They are too selfish to give their time.
A five point lead is not a "skinny margin."
Looks like Cheney will prove to be correct.
Keep in mind-most states that have early voting are heavy GOP states. This news might not be as good as we thought.
You are correct! The Dems are dragging deadbeats to this early voting. I'm getting a sense that the MSM and the Dem party is about to be turned on its head on Nov. 2nd.
Early this summer I predicted 55% Bush (over 300 EV's), 44% sKerry, 1% Nader.
The wait is killing me, but it is fun to watch sKerry growing more desperate each day.
The MSM is pulling out all the stops, but I don't see it working.
2002 wasn't very long ago. :-)
