The Day the Enlightenment Went Out (Garry Wills loses it)
The New York Times ^ | November 4, 2004 | Garry Wills

Posted on 11/04/2004 3:49:47 PM PST by EveningStar

This election confirms the brilliance of Karl Rove as a political strategist. He calculated that the religious conservatives, if they could be turned out, would be the deciding factor. The success of the plan was registered not only in the presidential results but also in all 11 of the state votes to ban same-sex marriage. Mr. Rove understands what surveys have shown, that many more Americans believe in the Virgin Birth than in Darwin's theory of evolution.

"Mr. Rove understands what surveys have shown, that many more Americans believe in the Virgin Birth than in Darwin's theory of evolution."

That has to be about the dumbest sentence written on this election that I have read to date. It panders to the worst sort of bigoted stereotypes.

The Darwin monkey bones controversy had very little to do with the 2004 election.

A dithering liberal idiot living in in own little moral relativist universe. He cuts and pastes Darwin's work to suit his blighted view, but if he were to read into Darwin's writings he would probably call it "hate speech."

He compares systematic rape, torture and mass killings to putting underwear on someone's head. He also compares the Bush administration to the Taliban. And they say republicans are out of touch, hermph.

"I'm really getting sick of the media trying to spin Bush's DECISIVE victory as some sort of homophobic advance of the religious right."

You and me both. Prepare to hear more of this. They are trying to steal some intellectual and moral high ground from good heartland people because it's all they've got. If the election didn't go their way then obviously too many ignorant, toothless, gun totin', God-fearin', porch sittin' people voted.

It makes me sick these elitists are given print and tv for this bile. SPIN IT ANYWAY YOU WANT, TRUTH IS A ZERO SUM GAME.

I wish I was as powerful as the left thinks Rove is.

Don't forget that the reason that the gay marriage petitions were on 11 ballots was because of five MASSACHUSETTS' judges.

How in the world did Rove ever get those leftist judges in Kerry's home state to go along with his plan?

The way the liberals demonize Rove, you would think he was the one that made gay marriage an issue. Rove is quite simply only guilty of not telling the liberals they did make it the deciding factor in the election.

Hoist by their own petard a wise man once observed.

As Confuscious said: "Man going through ariport turnstyle sideways going to Bangkok."

The fine art of overlooking the obvious.

IIRC, up until the mid-Sixties, Professor Wills was a WFB colleague and contributor to NR.

It is absolutely amazing to me that liberals think and act as if the Republic was founded on the principles of easy abortion and homosexual rights. No national Democrat campaigned on either of these issues until about 25 years ago, and gay marriage has only come into vogue in the last couple of years. In fact, KERRY said he opposed gay marriage.

"America, the first real democracy in history, was a product of Enlightenment values - critical intelligence, tolerance, respect for evidence, a regard for the secular sciences. Though the founders differed on many things, they shared these values of what was then modernity. They addressed "a candid world," as they wrote in the Declaration of Independence, out of "a decent respect for the opinions of mankind." Respect for evidence seems not to pertain any more ..."

This clown is a History professor? Our education system is in more trouble than I thought.

This guy is thinking backwards. He should be wondering why a party that aspires to be a national party would make an assault on marriage its banner issue. Why a party that aspires to be a national party would do everything possible to drive believers out of the party, and to attack the views of the very people whose support they need.

You might think he would be wondering why a party that aspires to national leadership would choose as its leader the only man among them who was guaranteed to alienate every one of its veterans.

The Democratic Party has, in my opinion, always been mistaken on most issues, but at one time Christians and veterans and patriotic citizens could find a home in the party and still have their conscience intact. Wills should be asking why his party keeps trying to push them out, rather than wondering why ex-Dems are voting Republican. Again.

I fear he's done himself some damage with that editorial. Look at the posts here, I suspect that many of the people posting would enjoy and appreciate his Lincoln book. Now, they will never pick it up.
