'Anti-Male' Marketing Prompts Complaints

Angry parents and grandparents are letting Verizon Communications know they don't like a new Verizon DSL commercial that makes fun of fathers.

Glenn Sacks, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host, urged his listeners to call Verizon, after learning about a TV ad that shows a father trying, but failing, to help his young daughter with her homework.

The daughter, annoyed by her father, looks to her mother for intervention. The mother tells the father to go wash the dog, orders him to leave the daughter alone, and then yells at him when he is slow to comply, Sacks said.

Sacks told listeners that he "doesn't think Verizon means any harm." But he said it appears that the company - like some others -- has developed a "moral blind spot towards disparaging males."

According to Sacks, "Research shows how indispensable fathers are to their children's well-being....it is tremendously damaging to convince kids that their father is an idiot or that fathers are worthless."

Yup,,,, MEN !!!!!!!! JUST SAY NO !!!!! TO WOMEN ,, I have already done it, I just let them be spoiled brats and stomp their feet.
It's gets easy as you go along.
Men !! women may get mad and be spoiled brats and stomp their feet, but, when they come to their senses, they WILL HAVE MORE RESPECT FOR YOU.
Yes, they might not like your decision, but, they will gain more respect for you over time.
JUST SAY NO !!! and mean it.

Haha! Like I said, I enjoy keeping folks like this honest.

It's the easiest thing to treat a benefactor with disdain - it's human nature, sadly. The more rock solid, loyal, and dependable a person is (goes for men & women), the greater the sentiment that no matter what, that person will be there for you.

Unchecked, this grows to being 'taken for granted.'

It's nice to keep everyone in your life 'honest' in this way. Everyone at everytime should know that your contributions are elective on your part, and not cumpolsory. I make it a point to be undependable (or at the very least, uninterested at their plight) for everyone in my life at judicious times in our relationships: it stands in stark contrast to my 'normal' conduct and is a nice reminder that they should value the contrubutions and the person.

After all, if they don't, those contributions might vanish for good. :-)

"The theme of a lot of commercials is, "Here's so-and-so struggling along using an inferior brand, while THIS person is getting great results with OUR product." In those commercials, the dolt using the wrong brand is almost always a white male, and he has to be set straight by the other character, who is always a female and/or minority. I've long been wondering when white males were going to start getting sick of this."

Point taken. But if you watch carefully, they are doing this to black males also. Even worse, they often portray black males as (gasp!) nerds!

I'm sick and tired of the male bashing in this country. Especially trying to make fathers look less than masculine. When you have to try so hard to attempt to make the father look weak...there's something wrong. I know many a father including my own and my husband who are strong and caring and loving and sensitive and who would have fought to the death to protect their families. Another case of trying to shove something down our throats and figure if we listen or watch it long enough we will agree with the trash we are seeing.

Long live the men
Long live the women
They are different no matter how hard someone likes to say they are not and for that I thank God.
Men truly love women
Women truly love men
And for those good men and women I thank God as well.
It's time we stop bashing each other and remember a mother and father is someone a child needs to look up to. Trying to make the father look weak and the mother look strong and smarter and all that is assinine not to mention the damage it does to the children.

Women have been the strength behind man since the beginning of time. We don't need to go out there and shout it to the world. Men have been the strength FOR women since the beginning of time. Wanting to protect them and always do what is right for them. There's nothing wrong with either scenario.

There's always somebody trying to divide people and our country. Men be men. Women be women. Fathers be fathers. Mothers be mothers. Love each other and don't compete. That's not what love and marriage is all about. Love and marriage is first off loving each other, working together as a team for the betterment of your families and then entering into your golden years still in love, holding hands, helping each other still and enjoying their now adult children who have grown, developed and truly know the love their parents had for each other and for them. There is no better reward.

It's time to stop the madness and move on.

This has been going on for a while. In a TV or radio commercial, the woman is always the one with the solution to the problem, or the one who recommends the company's product to fix things, or is somehow in a positive light.

This is not to say that whenever a man is present he's depicted as a doofus; it's that whenever a doofus is depictd, it's a white man.

When you use caps, you may be taken by some as screamer(this is a small 'room')

Would not want to see that happen.

In general, I agree with you. Maybe this is just one of my (many) idiosyncratic, curmudgeonly peeves.

57 - 60% of college grads are women. Then women lament that there aren't enough smart men.

Just like to point out that there is at least one bastion of manhood still let in academia. Engineering. Except for the occasional chemical engineer you rarely find women pursuing that field at all.

Yes, saw that. It's a nice commercial. Only shows what teamwork can do. The way it's supposed to be.

Lets not overstate it, but look at my post right after yours for my take on the theme. It's entirely legit to keep the people in your life 'honest' by beiong judicious in your elective behavior.

Both men and women should do the same.

Yes, it has, and you're exactly right.

My wife claimed I was making this up until she actually started paying attention.

Well, hashing stuff out like this is fine, I have nothing against it. I will say that taking things too seriously and being too quick to 'offense' isn't a very productive way to live life.

No TV commercial can possibly harm me, as my conduct in my personal life makes it very clear how I am to be treated by my colleauges, friends, lovers, etc.

Anyone who bases their conduct to me based on pop culture depictions of males, italians, etc, probably won't be holding on to my acquaintence for very long.

Their loss, not mine.

A good example of a loving HUSBAND / WIFE relationship is in the BIBLE EPH chapter 5 : 25 ,, the BIBLE says, " Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church, even giving himself for it "

If you have already checked this, I apologize, not trying to insult your intelligance.

But I have relatives using Verizon DSL and I don't remember all those ports being blocked... do you have a router in between your computer and dsl modem? Or possibly your dsl modem has a built in router or firewall? I have seen several newer DSL modems with both features.

If that is the case you need to configure your router / modem to either turn on port forwarding or (if it's a firewall problem) unblock the port you want to use.

I also just checked a number of online reviews of verizon and none mentioned blocking ports... Any you could always try a differant port like 8080?

Actually, if you read my later posts in this thread you will see clearly that I have.

That is, I explicitly say that it's incumbent on everyone to entrain the people in their life. I explicitly endorse punishing bad behavior (because if you reward it, you get more bad behavior), and implicitly say that good beavior should be rewarded (to get more of it).

That's pavlovian to an extent, I think. And in any case, my personal conduct does more to entrain the people in my life than even the most pervasive pop culture depictions.

If they don't, then those people are jettisoned from my life. "Good luck out there!"

"men seem as resistant to the truth as women"

Even some churches (shock) seem to be to heavy handed in regards to "girls rule" personalities. Churches that have personalities similar to the people on sitcoms are not churches you want to stay with. We are not going to find many if any examples and roll models in the world in regards to the way God intended the family to look. There is only one place to go to get a clear picture branded on our minds as to what He wants the family to look like.
