Mosque set on fire in Netherlands By Geraldine Coughlan BBC News, The Hague

There have been more than 20 attacks on Muslim buildings There has been another fire in a mosque in the Netherlands, in what appeared to be the latest in a spate of attacks. Police said the mosque, in the south-eastern village of Helden near the German border, was set on fire early on Saturday.

They said it was not immediately clear if arsonists were behind the attack.

There have been more than 20 incidents of fires or vandalism at Muslim buildings since the murder of the controversial filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

His suspected killer, an alleged Muslim radical of Dutch-Moroccan nationality, was arrested.

Tensions are running high in the Netherlands since the killing.

There have also been a string of retaliatory attacks on Christian churches.

Parliament has been debating how to deal with the growing problem.

There have been calls from some right-wing politicians to deport radical Muslim clerics and close down mosques where they operate.

MPs have asked the government to draft new legislation forcing Dutch mosques to employ only Imams who have studied Islamic religion in the Netherlands, a proposal that is widely supported.

This is the villige I live in. There were two mosques, one Moroccan and one Turkish, located in an old schoolbuilding. Earlier this year there also was a firebomb attack which did not set the building on fire.

But you DON'T want to see them (us as I'm part Dutch) angry.

In the long journey from the northern British Isles to Cape Hatteras, my family acquired a good bit of Dutch blood... and you are surely right about that- "still waters run deep."

Yes I am Dutch. People here have been terrorized by muslims for the past decade:

(more links in the 3rd one).

In their schools they tell their children to hate us and fight us. So people here are fed up and since the politicians/police don't care to act they feel that they need to act themselves.

I know what you are talking about. I live near a mosque, and a friend invited me to a gathering, they spent all their time talking about jihad in your land.

We don't have that type of parallel in America...

The Great Depression.........but most of those people are either dead or near the end of their years.

My departed father spent his entire life saving just in case it happened again. It was a fear that drove him all his life. He finished everything on his plate and would not let us waste a single morsel on our plates.

In addition, he and my mother told many stories during the Holidays about WWII and the rationing of food. Mom shared stories about recipies for cakes using spoiled milk and dad use to tell us how you can prepare spoiled cold cuts for safe eating.........

I find the violence in "enlightened" Netherlands interesting. In this country, after 3000 people were murdered by 19 Muslin terrorists, the expectation was that "Christians" would hate Muslims and burn/destroy mosques. It didn't happen! Just like hate crimes against Jews didn't result from watching the Passion of the Christ.
ONE person is murdered by ONE Muslim in the Netherlands where Christianity is in a decline, and the violence is escalating.
Europe should look at this response and the response of Americans ("who were stupid enough to vote for Bush") and ask the question....why the difference?

"They said it was not immediately clear if arsonists were behind the attack."

Agreed. Maybe they were demolitionists involved in an attack they horribly botched.

dutch rub (knuckles on the noggin)
dutch treat (everybody pays)

It is very much a "dutch doors make good neighbors" sort of thing. Live and let live has a implicit other side -- screw with me and I screw you back.

THey have mosques everywhere. They aren't real apparent, they keep to themselves, but they are here. I'm in Houston, but I'm quite sure there is at least one mosque in Midland.

My Mom used to tell us how her mother would send them out to pick greens by the side of the road. How white bread was only for a very special occasion, hence Mom never liked anything else later in life. Even when I was a kid my Aunt told me and my cousin Rita to go out back and wring a chicken for dinner. We picked one and chased it around but never caught it. My aunt came out and took care of it, I couldn't watch.

Oh -- and before they got a manufactured house it got mighty cold going to the bathroom in the winter.

American Prosperity has not been going on all that long in the grand scheme of things and there's no guarantee that it will continue if we don't appreciate it and work for it. Same with Het Nederlands.

Interesting. Might I suggest writing a "vanity" post to let us know, in your words, what's going on in the Netherlands? We have had plenty of mainstream news about the events, but it would be interesting to read about your attitudes and the attitudes of your acquaintances and friends as well... kind of a "man-on-the-street" report.

Should you decide to compose a post like this, please ping me to it.

Regards

I don't have much bad to say about the Dutch. When the French threw my Christian ancestors out just because they were Protestants the Dutch gave us safe haven until coming to America. Remember the Euro "enlightenment" did not come until after the French protestants left France and gave them their financial ruin.

During the depression his family was sent away to live with with various relatives (aunts and Grand parents) while his dad went West for work to support the family. They couldn't afford the rent and were kicked out of the house they lived in.

He use to tell us about how his aunts grew most of the food in the garden and canned like there was no tomorrow. The Aunts had limited income and couldn't afford sugar. So when the birthdays came they use to make ice bow cake for the kids.........my dad loved Ice Box cake. When I was young and my birthday was about to arrive my mother use to ask me what kind of cake I wanted.........I always requested Ice box cake.
