Mosque set on fire in Netherlands

Mosque set on fire in Netherlands By Geraldine Coughlan BBC News, The Hague

There have been more than 20 attacks on Muslim buildings There has been another fire in a mosque in the Netherlands, in what appeared to be the latest in a spate of attacks. Police said the mosque, in the south-eastern village of Helden near the German border, was set on fire early on Saturday.

They said it was not immediately clear if arsonists were behind the attack.

There have been more than 20 incidents of fires or vandalism at Muslim buildings since the murder of the controversial filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

His suspected killer, an alleged Muslim radical of Dutch-Moroccan nationality, was arrested.

Tensions are running high in the Netherlands since the killing.

There have also been a string of retaliatory attacks on Christian churches.

Parliament has been debating how to deal with the growing problem.

There have been calls from some right-wing politicians to deport radical Muslim clerics and close down mosques where they operate.

MPs have asked the government to draft new legislation forcing Dutch mosques to employ only Imams who have studied Islamic religion in the Netherlands, a proposal that is widely supported.

May sound odd to you but:

1. The guy was apparently born a Dutchman. To do something like he did is very much not the Dutch way.
2. The way that Theo Van Gogh was 'butchered'/almost beheaded on the street by this animal was horrific. Violence like that is pretty exceptional in Holland (and elsewhere in Europe).
3. There is an undercurrent in Europe (despite the commonly held US view otherwise) of profound dislike of Muslim culture, oppression of their own women/their open contempt for Western women and their general intolerance of our own European society and values. This is not openly expressed due to PC pressure. It only needs something like this murder for the lid to come off and we approach the abyss. I suspect that the Dutch government are sh***ing conkers in case this takes off any more.
4. All of the aspects of 3 above have become much more focussed since 9/11 and people are 'educating' themselves about Islam and finally being forced to recognise the cuckoo in the nest.

" Thats because the Dutch can trace a lot of their roots back to the Vikings. Yes, they can be easy going most of the time. Yes, they can take a lot and sit there smiling but crowd them a little too close or push them too far back in the corner and look out. That Viking blood boils to the top and the fights on. My family tree came over at the turn of the last century from Norway and my blood has been at a low simmer for over three years. "

Let's all remember which culture gave us the word "berserk" and why. Viking warriors or "berserkers" as they were called (for their habit of wearing bear skin tunics) were feared throughout europe for being feirce, unrelenting fighters. I too have viking blood through my norman forebears, and between that and the Irish and Scottish it's a wonder I haven't hopped a longboat and sailed for the middle east ;^ )

It is what ever the Imam wants it to be.

That would of course depend on the meaning of "is"

There have also been a string of retaliatory attacks on Christian churches.

Attack on Mosque: Headline

Attacks on Churches: Paragraph 6

Media Bias: Priceless

(And I'm an atheist!)

Don't misunderstand. I think that the murder is atrocious and I'm actually glad that the populace has reacted with such horror! And their concern about their Muslim population and the hate that is spawned from the mosques is rightly placed. (I admit I only just read the account of the murder...a horrible murder in broad daylight)
My only point is that Americans, because of Iraq and the election of Bush, are painted as hateful, ignorant people by most Europeans, if you believe the press. After 9/11, we did not have the kind of "hate crimes" that many Muslim groups predicted. If what has happened in the Netherlands happened in the US, I guarantee the European weenies would be lambasting us as bigots.

It is clear that in the face of the Muslim threat, that the people will act if their elected authorities refuse to do so. The Dutch are a tolerant people who will no longer tolerate the intolerable.

"So people here are fed up and since the politicians/police don't care to act they feel that they need to act themselves."

Are you saying that there is a popular uprising in the NL against the Moslems? How widespread is it? Is it organized? Are there objectives other than burning down mosques? How violent will it become? Will the government react quickly to end it? I have lots of questions, but this is enough for now...

"MPs have asked the government to draft new legislation forcing Dutch mosques to employ only Imams who have studied Islamic religion in the Netherlands, a proposal that is widely supported."

This is something that needs to be adopted, and fast, in the US. Only those who learn the practice of this religion in the US should be allowed to teach it to others here.

It could slow down the spread of this deadly disease.

I've read about those who survived the Nazi hold on Amsterdam, in fact I once knew someone who grew up there.

They lived on tulip bulbs. The bulbs of their beautiful native flowers were their only source of nourishment.

Oh no! People fighting back against the religion of pieces! If we have another terrorist attack on U.S. soil, we might see some of the same thing.

Europe should look at this response and the response of Americans ("who were stupid enough to vote for Bush") and ask the question....why the difference?

Maybe certain Europeans actually have a better understanding of what Islam is about than do the Americans? It will come to the point that mosques are burned and torn down -- or else all the synagogues and churches will be. Islam makes this an either-or situation.

Notice the difference too between the islamics and the Dutch --- the islamics are careful to burn and bomb buildings with people in them --- look at the bombings of cafes in Israel. The Dutch burned an empty building. No worse than burning a Nazi headquarters.

It looks like the Dutch are mad as hell, and not going to take it any more.

I hope the Frogs see the writing on the wall.
