A lenghty rant that does contain enough quirky insights to reward the reader.

DAVE SIM/CEREBUS PING!
(ill try to read this "rant" later)

West's actions would've been applauded had they been done in any era other than our own.

Lt.Col. West punished two soldiers for doing what he did, and then demanded a get-out-of-jail-free card for his own misconduct.
He who cannot command himself has no business commanding others.

The Persian King Cyrus asked the Lydian King Croesus what he must do in order not to have to fear the Greeks in his kingdom rising up against him. Croesus replied: "[T]o make sure of their never rebelling against you, or alarming you more, send and forbid them to keep any weapons of war, command them to wear tunics under their cloaks, and to put buskins upon their legs, and make them bring up their sons to lyre-playing, harping, and shop-keeping. So you will soon see them become women instead of men, and there will be no more fear of their revolting against you."

West's conduct would not have merited a second glance during World War II.

A must read for every American. It is the enemy within that will defeat us.

The problem with what West did is that it became public. Normally, the Army would have looked the other way on this if it could have. But because someone ratted him out, the Army had to do something because what he did was a technical violation of the Law of War to which our military is supposed to be bound.
The writer is overreacting.

I served under COL Heidi Brown during Operation Iraqi Freedom-she is definitely class-one of the finest officers I have ever served under (male or female). However, the article erroneously describes her as the commander of the 507th Maintenance Company. COL Brown commanded the 507th's parent unit, the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade.

At that point, the Army had to act to keep the chain of command intact--nothing causes problems for morale faster than "do as I say, not as I do."
