Telemarketers Will Soon Have Access To Your Cell Phone Number
HOI 19 News ^ | December 3, 2004

Telemarketers will soon have access to your cell phone number.

This spring, all cell phone numbers will be put into a directory. The good news is, you do not have to worry about losing your friend's cell phone number. The bad news is, telemarketers will be calling your phone and using up your minutes.

"It would be an option if you wanted to be in a directory or not. There could be some advantages - some people are virtually unreachable. About 5% of the cell phone users don't have a land line listing anywhere, so you lose your friends cell number and you don't have a way to get to them. So there could be that advantage", said Pamela Meyer of the Better Business Bureau.

If you wish to have your cell phone number added to the Do Not Call List, call 1-888-382-1222. You must call from the number you wish to have added to the list.

I went to this web site and it took me all of 5 minutes to place one home and two cell phones on this "do not call" list.

I understand this provides you no assurance that your cell phone numbers won't be called in the future. Please correct me if you know definitively that is wrong. I know the site states you can list your "mobile phone" and I did that also.

Well, I use my cell phone only for outgoing calls, so it's off all the time, unless I need to make a call. No problem for me, at least.

Thank heavens that Verizon is not on the list.

Same here with the exception that I leave it on while the kids are with a sitter. I'm going to be darn mad if that thing vibrates during a movie and it isn't an emergency!

Guess I'll be a lone voice here, though it's already too late, we already have more government regulation and more costs, or do people think the 'free' do not call number is actually free? I went and got my own little machine back when all the hubbub was going on, works just great, cost $29.95 and will go with me wherever I go meaning I don't have to call every time I get a new number. But still, from now on my tax dollars will continue to pay for that 'free' number so all the lazy out there can have 'daddy' gov take care of them.

I did the " do not call " thing for my regular phone last year ..It lasted all of about a month then the calls started coming again as usual..They are all in bed with each other and your cell wont stop ringing no matter what soon..The whole damn idea of a cell phone is that it's private and the only people who have the # are those who you give it to ..Who the hell wants their cell # published.?.What a bunch of bullshit they are feeding us . Have you gone to the website and checked if your TN's are really listed? We registered in Sept. of 2003 and calls dropped off dramatically. When any do come through, we remind them we are on the list and not to call again (or else!). The program works. Check and see if your registration got entered. If not, re-register. If it is registered, you can file complaints. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease (or the $800. brake job!) Cheers!

monkees in the zoo laugh at the idea of providing a phone number to someone for the purpose of not getting calls.

That makes two of us (plus the monkeys), while the rest of the country thinks the gummint sponsored Do-Not-Call list is a perfectly sane ideaerr. What Do-No-Do-Something-To-Me list will our wise men in Washington think of next?

A cell phone seems so much more personal than a home phone that spamming a cell phone with advertisements is a much greater invasion of privacy.

Six national wireless companies (AllTel, AT&T Wireless, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint PCS, and T-Mobile) have banded together and hired Qsent, Inc. to produce a Wireless 411 service

If you think they are just trying to create a 411 service, I have a bridge to cell you.

Here's a few words for the wise regarding "Do Not Call Lists". When the program was drafted, buried within the fine print, the lawyers slipped in a loophole/backdoor, which makes it legal for a telemarketer to call even if you signed up on the list. Basically within the wording in the fine print of some software, warranty cards, and various other things you may sign-up for or send in, these buried clauses are waiving your right not to be called by that particular manufacturer, and/or whomever they are cahooting with.

My husband has done some funny things to telemarketers. He told one, who tried to sell us beef, that we didn't eat beef we ate dogs and raised our own (imagine dogs barking in the background). Then he tried to get the guy to place an order for some dog meat. he he

I just politely ask them if they can hold on for just a minute and then I lay the phone down and bang pots and pans around in the kitchen. I would NOT do that on my cell phone.

You can also use this Federally mandated TN to opt-out of getting credit card offers.
888-567-8688
It's important to note that this toll-free number has a limited purpose - simply to enable consumers to opt-out of receiving pre-approved offers of credit. Nothing more.

..And if you have a hold option on your phone, tell them to hang on while you yell the name of whoever they asked for (to pick up the phone). Then say "I'll put you on hold and (so-and-so) will pick up in the other room. Put them on hold and go back every minute or two asking if (so-and-so) picked up. Yell again, put them back on hold and keep repeating the process until they hang up. This trick kills their productivity!
