We're Not in G-Rated Kansas Anymore

Porn 'superstores' are thriving near rural offramps, causing the locals to debate obscenity and privacy, sometimes in court.

By Stephanie Simon
Times Staff Writer

December 6, 2004

ABILENE, Kan. — Outside, the prairie lies dark and still. In the windowless gray building by the Interstate 70 offramp, a clerk with a tired face rings up sex toys. "Need batteries for that?" she asks politely, again and again.

Two women in prim business suits gawk at a shelf of raunchy gag gifts, giggling. A truck driver searches thousands of DVDs for a pornographic movie. Near the Love Sling of Ecstasy, a wife confers with her husband by cellphone as she studies a tidy display of vibrators, hundreds of them, in every size and color.

Adult "superstores" like this are popping up all over rural America — brightly lighted, clean, as well-organized and well-stocked as a Wal-Mart.

Remote freeway offramps are X-rated in Quaker City, Ohio (pop. 563), and Nelson, Mo. (pop. 212), in Montrose, Ill., and Perry, Mich. The Lion's Den chain operates 29 stores in the Midwest, including this one in Abilene, off Exit 272, near the cows and hay bales of Dickinson County.

<...snip...>

That prospect doesn't scare many adult-store owners.

"The way I look at it, protesters just bring in more business," Haltom said. "You can't buy that kind of advertising."

What can I say, I snipped at the wrong spot.
I think they were referring to protests or legal challenges in the article.

"A truck driver searches thousands of DVDs for a pornographic movie. "

Well, since all of them are pornographic in that store, he shouldn't take long. Sheesh! What has happened to the English language in newspapers?

Yep. I did a search for a link and low and behold, the first hit was here at FR:

This clown must have been hired by the store to promote the store. We had a Castle Superstore inflate a huuuge condom balloon (with smiley face) above their store for a few days and they got all sorts of free publicity from all of the complaints to the media

The scarier thing is that with dashboard DVD players, this trucker is probably watching it while he's driving. As if those things hadn't caused enough accidents by people not having their eyes on the road, now we have to worry about them having their hands on the wheel too!!! LOL

This is depressing.

I agree. But it should not be surprising.

Silly wabbit...dont you know that sex has no moral component to it, it's just plug and play with people instead of software.

This is, after all, part of the libertine vision for society.

Don't forget the newest one in Little Rock that opened up last month, the Clinton Liebrary and Adult Bookstore.

Not everything sold in those stores is necessarily pornography; sometimes married monogamous Christians go to those places to purchase *items other than porn*.

Regarding which: as a chemist who once had to tour a sex toy factory "in the line of duty", let me warn my Red Zone comrades: the sex toy industry has no safety standards whatsoever, and some of those devices leach high levels of toxic plasticizers into the body. The more flexible the item, the greater the danger (other than medical grade implantable silicone). These leaching additives can result in hormone disruption, harm to a fetus (even years later), sterility, and heaven knows what else. Materials which were taken out of childrens' chewable toys (pacifiers, teething rings, etc) years ago, are still used without restriction in adult toys, so watch out!

If such a device is labeled "for novelty purposes only", you can be SURE that it isn't safe, the manufacturer KNOWS it, and has added the "novelty purposes" clause in order to insulate himself against lawsuits due to the toxicity of the materials he's using ("Your Honor, I sold it as a novelty; I didn't know she'd actually.... Case dismissed).

Having never been in one myself, mind telling what items are in there that are appropriate for married monogamous Christians?

Uh, off subject a little, but your post remindeded me of a great story Ken Kesey wrote for Esquire years ago. It was called, I think, Ken Kesey's Cows...

sorry for the interruption. I'm leaving now.

I agree that married monogomous Christians can purchase other "items".

There are web sites that cater just to christians for this purpose (like book22.com). This way you can buy your "marital aids" (or whatever they are euphemistically called today) without supporting a porn store.

I suggest you check out a Christian website called TheMarriageBed.com.

Check out the shopping links.

One of the tamer examples might be lingerie. As for the kinkier stuff, that's a matter of individual conscience, and I don't plan on debating it with anyone (cf Romans 14).

Everytime I see the word "monogamous" it reminds me of the time that my girlfriend and I were flying back from Vegas. She was in a seat next to another woman and after some conversation, they started working on a crossword puzzle together. They asked me to help with one word. "What is the 8 letter word meaning intimate relations with only one person?"

Without skipping a beat I said, "MONOTONY!" and promptly recieved an elbow to the ribs from my girlfriend.
