The current UN cannot live without the United States. We pay about a quarter of its budget and for what? To have us slapped down by a group of bloodthirsty dictators who hate our system of government? To have human rights abuses investigated by a committee composed of the worst human rights violators on the face of the earth? To have UN people run for cover as soon as the situation gets tough in Iraq? For the life of me I can't figure out any benefit to staying in the UN.

This talk of getting out of the U.N. needs to stop.
Sure I hate the U.N. Sure the idea of imploding the U.N. building makes me laugh. But come on people, do we really want Russia, France, China and Great Britian ruling the security council?
It is like the US has "Battered Wife Syndrome" and the UN is the batterer. I believe, now more than ever, we need to get out of the UN.
We need to stay in the UN and exercise our veto on everything. But we don't need to allow them to operate in our country, and we don't need to foot the bill. And we DO need to reclaim ANY sovereignty that we have surrendered.
I don't think we should "get out of the UN", I think we should create a "League of Free Nations." We could, over time, defer more and more important world decisions to the will of that group and let the UN "wither and die on the vine."
The word games BS; we pay a quarter of its budget (of its operating budget, which means its bureaucrats) . I remember reading a while back. When you count all of our food aid that goes under the UN flag, the use of our military, planes to transport the food etc. its more like 80%.
We are the U.N. less special interest groups and sordid nations of the corrupt and unwilling. It was a good idea gone bad and its to late to fix it. Start a new organization dedicated to the destruction of terrorism and depot regimes around the globe. We need to weed out rogue countries from entrance into the coalition to weaken it. Screw China, Russia, and France! They are the problem.
I don't see where that would make any difference at all. Thats assuming that they would even survive without US funds. But really, even with us there, what have they done? Would they be any more effective without the US? I think they'd be even more inefficient, corrupt and incompetent. They get almost nothing done now, so take the US out of the picture and I don't see that changing very much.
I realized just how useless the UN is when I found out that Rwanda was a member of the Security Council during the genocide.
The UN is living proof that a body of nations with separate cultural and political interests cannot work.
Your statement is correct,and profound.
It ties all the problems up in a neat package-----the UN just won't work!!!!!
You presume there is any relevance to that group.
In the last four years the US contribution to the UN -- when you consider all the military aid that Bill Comrade Klinton authorized the US spent over 24 Billion dollars on the UN -- 87% of the UN's true cost.
If we leave the UN it will colapse. Who cares if the French and Russians run the UN. We can openly say that == Since we are leaving the UN we will no longer follow any of it's rules or decisions just like the WORLD COURT!
What will the UN do if they don't like the US -- give us SANCTIONS just like they did to Iraq?
I think these people were Muslim. I'm not so sympathetic to Muslims anymore. But I still feel sorry for them.
Pray for W and Our Troops
The UN still serves a purpose. I'd rather have the ambassadors come to the UN and air their grevences while we ignore them, than having them get together behind closed doors and come out with big smiles. The UN has never really had any power. It is just a stage for the rest of the world to pretend they are important. Some times WE need that so THEY don't start focusing their attention to important matters...like what WE are doing.
Your right I would rather have them out in the open where we can exercise the veto than having France, Germany, Russia and China having comlete control over it. I think it's time that all member states pull their fair share of the load, The United States should not have to burden the taxpayers with more than a reasonable share. If we supply the food and the equipment to deliver it then it should be paid for out of the UN coffers.
Exactly. And the only credibility it did have came from our presence there.
