Schools' rules on religious candy canes assailed
associated press ^ | December 15, 2004

A religious liberties law firm accused Plano school officials today of violating students' constitutional rights by forbidding them to hand out candy canes and pencils with religious messages on them.

Attorneys with the Plano-based Liberty Legal Institute said they planned to file a federal lawsuit claiming the district has an unconstitutional censorship policy that victimizes students.

Several parents and students planned to discuss their concerns at an afternoon news conference. Attorneys intended to notify the district of the lawsuit at that time and file the petition later Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Sherman.

Plano schools spokeswoman Nancy Long did not immediately return a telephone message from The Associated Press.

She previously has denied that district policy forbids students from passing out materials with religious messages; rather, she has said each school has a central distribution area where such materials can be left for students to pick up at their own choosing.

"This lawsuit includes a large amount of evidence that demonstrates the pervasive religious hostility in Plano ISD," said Hiram Sasser, the Liberty Legal Institute's director of litigation.

Last week, Plano school officials sent a letter home requesting that parents not send their children to school with anything green or red this holiday season, Sasser said. All cups, plates, napkins and icing must be white or the children violate the district's policy, he said.

"These government officials have lost all common sense. This Christmastime and religious censorship is not the law and this discrimination must stop," said Kelly Shackelford, chief counsel for Liberty Legal Institute. "Our children are the ones suffering from this discrimination. Our schools are not zones of religious censorship."

Red and Green are now unconstitutional colors.

If I'd ever suspected a school administration of spending entirely too much time sucking dope through their noses, this would be the time, eh?!

These people are so far gone they're mentally ill (presuming the "red/green" thing is true).

Sounds to me like it's time for ALL parents to send their kids to school wearing JUST red and green clothing. :)

Next, the schools will dig up all evergreens and replace them with Black Locust trees. And don't even get me started about what they plan for Holly Trees.

Plano, Texas is the same place where the mother killed her daughter by cutting the baby's arms off last month. Just a hunch, but I would say the school sorely needs to allow the spread of God's message.

These liberals are OUT OF THEIR MINDS!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a Christian but I recognize that Christmas is a CHRISTIAN holiday. I still celebrate it and still sing Christmas songs (both religious and non religious) and enjoy the decorations and say "Merry Christmas" to people.

Liberals nowadays are just too..... too..... for words!

Apparently, it's not just the kindergarteners who're eating the glue down in Plano.

It's worse than that. We can't even use colors for anything that is traditionally associated with Christmas. I'm surprised "white" is even allowed in our schools.

Red and Green are now unconstitutional colors.

I read an article recently on the Red/Green alliance. Red = Marxists. Green = Islamists.

Celebrated in a Majority Christian Nation. If people don't believe in the Reason for the Season, there is always Santa Clause. Kids of Libs don't have any fun....

Candy canes can be mistaken for guns under certain circumstances. Any kid caught with a candy cane will have to be handcuffed and dragged out of school by the zero tolerance police. Any parent found to have distributed candy canes will have to be arrested for child abuse.

Big mistake.

Should have put porno messages on the candy cane. Or something about coming of the closet.

That would be been fine.

Sounds to me like an egregious violation of the First Amendment's "religion" clause:

"...or prohibiting the free expression thereof".

I didn't know that sending red paper cups to school was an expression of religion. These freaks are really taking this too far for their own cause.

Cups, plates, napkins, icing, etc. must be white. Sounds like something the KKK would suggest. I remember reading several years ago about the Klan entering a float in a city parade titled "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas".
