WASHINGTON -- The generation-long political retreat of Democrats across the South is disintegrating into a rout.

President Bush dominated the South so completely in last month's presidential election that he carried nearly 85 percent of all the counties across the region -- and more than 90 percent of counties where whites are a majority of the population, a Los Angeles Times analysis of the election shows.

Now the danger is that Republican politicians become self-serving and compromise conservative values.

"It never ceases to amaze me how many Republicans have this "love" fest going with Lieberman. How soon we forget!! As Algore's running mate, Lieberman was quick to push ALL of his previously held principles aside and was vocal in restating his beliefs ..."

Yes sir! At least here on FR.

Lie berman is northeastern slime, and inasmuch as the "new" Dimocrat Party has thrown themselves overboard, in their successful attempt at obscurity, that jackass looks good to many.

When you think about it, for Dims, it is reasonable.

Sharpton, Kucinich, Mostley Braun, Graham, Dean, Kerry, Gebhardt, Edwards???

I look at that line up and my right index finger twitches. ;)

The key thing to remember about Hillary is she is not Bill in terms of a politician.

I just hope it matters. She got elected to the Senate in New York without having to say a word...

I live in the Memphis area. You have no idea what it must have taken for the Commercial Appeal to print an article giving up on the Dems in the South.

There is probably not any paper anywhere in the US any more liberal than the CA.

No matter what trials that I might have today, I will be able to laugh because of this piece.

She'll probably carry New York in 2008...but that isn't enough to get her to 270 EV.

If they somehow could figure a way to sneak Phil Bredeson (D - Governor Tennessee) through the primary, he could do real well in the South. In fact, we got rid of our RINO Sundquist and elected a DINO (Bredeson).

Of course, Bredeson is way too conservative to ever get through the Democratic primary.

The very conservative columnist-talk show host Michael Graham, who so brilliantly performs every day on WMAL-AM in Washington, has a humorous, insightful book called Redneck Nation. In it he argues persuasively that the South did win the War in certain important ways--imposing its cultural tastes on much of America, for instance, exporting its former slaves ("You Yankees don't want us to have slaves down here? Fine, you take 'em"), and choosing presidents.

It's a joke. You know, funny because there's a bit of truth in it. Lighten up.

"They are closed up tighter than Dick's hatband. Whoever Dick is."

"Hat band" = foreskin.

You can guess who Dick is. :)

Good!

Now we need to remove lunatic rats from the military, civilians in the pentagon, CIA, FBI, Justice, and the State Department. Get the traitors, whiners and slackers out and on the streets with their whining lunatic buddies.

Well the Ted Kennedys, Walter Mondales, etc. of the party ensured that Conservative Southern Democrats had zero influence at the national level and ironically, the Clintons did nothing to reverse that. So Southern voters have certainly realized where they can get meaningful representation and where not. Repubs are a national party, RATS presently not.

"...offended..."

It's no real big deal. My dear, sweet, Christian mother-in-law and her whole family use that saying all the time knowing good and well what it's referencing. :)

I'd venture to guess that there's a whole lot of folks that use the saying that don't know what it means. :)

Yeah, Puerto Rico is a boil on the body politic. It should be nicely divested. Independence for Puerto Rico! Yeah, that's right.

The Midwest and Mid Atlantic are next to realign.. and have been realigning for years... Dems by and large are just too asleep at the wheel to notice.

The midwest and Midatlantic are going to be as solid Republican as the south in just a few more cycles (with the sole exception of Illinois, and there only because of Chicago).

If the democrats continue to try to turn this nation into a secular socialist republic, and the Republicans continue to run strong candidates, the dems are doomed to be the ever shrinking opposition party.

Actually with the upcoming 2006 primary battle between Perry, Kay Bailey , and Strayhorn, the RATS could make a comeback. Especially if Martin Frost, Charles Stenholm, and Jim Turner become the new dream tream.
