Please spare me the lectures, but I am thinking about taking my wife (who is a fan) to their concert next month in Columbia, SC, and want to know whether I can ethically support them or not. I do not willingly give my $$$ to libs if I can help it. Thanks in advance.

Yes it was the Cox Family, and Ralph Stanley. They were also extraordinary.

I sometimes promote bluegrass and alt-country concerts, and brought Alison and the band in last year...$50,000 before production expenses...but the show sold out.
What you'll get is a great night of acoustic music and a few corny jokes...no politics. Alison's banjo player, Ron Block (who also plays guitar) is a devout Christian...they're all salt of the earth people...Alison, Barry Bales (bass), Dan Tyminski (guitar), Jerry Douglas (dobro).
Got the concert...you won't regret it.

"Down to the River to Pray" and report back...
Heard it years ago - Doc Watson, (Down in the Valley to Pray) w/o all the backup chorus ans sweet mixing.
AK has a voice like a kazoo.
Now I know you've got to be kidding. Nobody, but nobody could think her voice is not the purest in the world. Also, Down to the River to pray, I saw in concert, it was her with two other ladies, acapella (sp?), no music, no "mixing", no chorus. I think you must be confusing her with someone else.

Have no idea as to her politics, but her voice to me is like fingernails dragged across the chalkboard - if anyone is old enough to get that.I gotta ask... who do you think is a *good* singer?

Martina McBride...best female voice in music today. She can hit and carry notes longer than anyone.

Alison & the band played at an outdoors bluegrass festival here in Augusta, GA several years ago just when the big hits were flowing onto the country charts.
They played during a rainstorm and the audience stayed and cheered. They were absolutely terrific! The musicianship was outstanding. You could really tell that the band members were a tight-knit and friendly group.
I have been to many concerts over the years and rank this as one of the best.
In December of '79, Harry Chapin sent his band home early for Christmas and played solo for us for over 3 hours in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was a riot. (Please no knocks on Harry...may he Rest in Peace).

Nobody, but nobody could think her voice is not the purest in the world. Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris for starters. That gal that was on the NBS show last night, who's name I did not get.
Allison has no breath support to her voice. If the Woodstock video is still available, check our Joanie's set - watch the air coming out her mouth (it was cool enough) as she sings.

You both seem to know your blue grass, perhaps you could tell me where I can find "Banjo Riff" by Doc and Merle Watson. The finest banjo pickin' I've ever heard.

Music doesn't get much better than bluegrass. Specially gospel bluegrass. Ricky Skaggs is totally awesome, on that we agree... Agreed, he is the best living but if I had to vote for the best ever, I would be torn between him and Bill Monroe.

Alison, Barry Bales (bass), Dan Tyminski (guitar), Jerry Douglas (dobro). It's already been said and I agree - Jerry Douglas is just amazing on the dobro.

I fill in on as host of a bluegrass show periodically. I play her tunes and get great response.
Many of our listners wouldn't vote for a Republican, yet they are morally conservative.
Well, ok, they get trashed, but they went to church Sunday morning.

Gotcha.
If I recall correctly Rickey Sksggs played in the Bill Monroe Band.
Here's a thought, get Rickey Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury and Allison in a concert all together.,,,

Don Reno and Red Smiley recorded the best known version of "Banjo Riff." You can download it for free at

Thanks for the link and the correct artists. I got the brothers mixed up. However I didn't find it free there, which is not a big deal, I don't mind paying.
I went to Wal-Mart online music and can't order just one song because they insist that I use Internet Explorer but I found an album that contains "Banjo Riff" for $13.88 and I like all the music on the album.

Thanks for the radio link. They are playing what sounds like Chinese Christmas music right now but I like their line up.
