I think it would destroy the religion.
I think it would cause such unimagineable confusion that there would be suicides rather than retribution. Millions prostrate themselves facing Mecca to make prayers 5 times a day. Millions have the Haj obligation to visit Mecca.
If the place is gone and not rebuildable, If Allah has demonstrated his inability to prohibit the destruction, Allah has obviuosly abandoned his people. Abandonment leads to suicide.
I agree with you in everything but one. I don't know that nuking Mecca would alienate that many more Muslims than already hate America. I'm against it becuase using nukes at this point (unless, perhaps, the terrorists use nukes against us) would be opening a can of worms I don't think we want to open.
It would END their religion. No longer could they bow and pray to a stone idol or make the required pilgrimmage to it...

A well placed neutron bomb would do wonders, creating a living radioactive signpost. As I recall all Muslims are supposed to visit Mecca once in their lives. We could even issue travel vouchers.
It totally obliterates one of their pillars of their faith, making it obvious that the religion is not backed by God, since God did not protect it and they are only left with 4 pillars unless they want to glow in the dark.
Nuking Mecca does a lot in the fight against islam, not only does it let muslims know their religion is false it plainly puts forward that they are toast if they mess with the West. It is what has happened over and over throughout history when islam is on the march and the West or others have put a stop to its march.....something so horrific is done that it scares the living daylights out of them thus stopping the march for a century or so until it is forgotten.
The only problem I see is in believing that the State Department or any part of the US government has the gumption to go through with this plan.....FAT CHANCE.

I'm not sure even I am ballsy enough to actually advocate this as a real possibility. However, if it were to occur, the consequence would be similar to Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.
It is the kind of crushing, un-rationalizable defeat necessary to clear the decks for a lasting peace. Remember, like the primitive, racist imperial Japanese, the Islamics are uncivilized magical-thinking barbarians. They would not have the cognitive sophistication to overcome such a spectacular repudiation of their crude pseudo-religious superstition-based "culture."
In short, the threat would work because the act itself would work.
