the responses here are disgusting. An elderly, disabled woman has died after a life few, if any of us could understand. She lived a pained, lonely life. Lobotomy was considered the "best of care" at the time.

My cousin underwent the procedure in the early 50s. The decision was made with the best of intentions.

RIP Rosemary Kennedy. Her life is the reason that other persons have benefited from public awareness of mental retardation. She was the inspiration for the Special Olympics program which continues to help families with special needs children. The Kennedy family has the good and the bad among them the same as all other families. Rosemary's life should be valued for itself and memory of her should not be attached to the real or perceived shortcomings of the rest of her family. Some of the posts on this thread are absolutely embarrassing, stupid, and uncalled for. Hatred for the Kennedys ill serves this woman who has died and is now released from the physical bounds of this earth.
