The novel concept of requiring Californians to have health insurance - like auto insurance - is drawing interest from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and lawmakers who plan to introduce legislation making it mandatory.

Uh-oh...This does not look good.
Socialist medicine now. And there are people wanting this character lib/dem for president? I'm sure California voters will vote for this lib idea.
bump
In related news, the last small business in the state closed and left.
This is just wrong. People can choose whether or not own a car. They can choose whether or not buy life insurance or home insurance.
Forcing people into health insurance is over the line. What next? Mandatory obesity monitoring and court-ordered nutrition counseling?
hope they create five or six more Business Requirements and FAST. We can use the jobs from companies like Countrywide -5,000 or Kinko's Headquarters and then Tenet Healthcare -1,000 etc etc. Bring those great corp. headquarter and hightech jobs to Dallas we love Calif regulations.
And unlike having a car, you cannot choose not to worry about your health or not. It's your body. You don't choose to buy a body; you do choose to buy a car, so at least there's a way around car insurance - don't have a car. But in this way truly every1 would be forced to buy something - in this case health (or body) insurance.
I've said this about all those safety regulations - esp. about babies and kids requiring so much equipment - isn't this really a way to make some companies rich?
And isn't making COMPANIES/BUSINESSES rich something Dems hate? Aren't Dems at cross-purposes w/things like this?
BTW yes I am fully aware that he's a RINO I was being sarcastic if not evident for all, he gets more lib/dim daily.
They (libs) are not against socialized medicine and this is where this is headed. It has nothing to do with capitalism.
We're not that stooopid
Prop 72 was defeated in the last election (employer health insurance mandates)
You're probably correct; they're not thinking (as usual) about who this potentially enriches.
But when they find out - oh....
****watch all the outcries about how insurance is too expensive and "WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING"!****** (I know! Government insurance only! :-D )
Agreed. Actually I'm pleased CA has come up w/some "radical" Props (187, 209) at all, much less the populace voted for them.
So don't be totally down-hearted. CA can't be all that bad. I wish I could say MD would come up w/some "radical" conservative-type proposals!
Modeled on a national plan by the New America Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, the "universal coverage, universal responsibility" approach faces numerous political hurdles.
The state would have to subsidize low-income workers; the New America plan and the proposed legislation both call for employer subsidies that voters recently rejected. Moreover, insurers would be required to cover clients with pre-existing medical conditions.
But in the aftermath of the narrow defeat of Proposition 72, which would have required employers to provide insurance for workers, the new proposal has provoked serious discussion in the Capitol.
New America Foundation.. per the Washington ComPost ... "The think tank of generation Next"
With folks like Bernard Schwartz and Laura D'Andrea Tyson sitting on its board.. uhhh.. Yeah.
I have news for you folks, they already have mandatory health insurance. It is called taxes - what you pay for state health care that you don't use. Instead, you use other private insurance that you pay for through a monthly payment.
The socialized health system is there already. It aint pretty, but its there.
-What next? Mandatory obesity monitoring and court-ordered nutrition counseling?-
Yes.
C'mon over to Arizona, where we don't have these kooky laws. Our Demo governess is more conservative than your RINO governator. Her big fight for the last two years has been to promote all-day kindergarten state-wide. She promised no tax increases (we have a majority R legislature that is more conservative than last year, so not likely anyway). We could lower taxes some but we'll need a new R governor for that... maybe Matt Salmon would run again.
My California inlaws are coming over here one by one; the last ones to arrive have put their house up for sale after moving to Prescott. They closed their small business because of laws like this. Grrrrr.
Not of the democRATs are in receipt of kickbacks from aforementioned companies.
