Ireland not to take part in EU battlegroups
EU Observer ^ | January 10 2005 | Honor Mahony

Ireland is a neutral country and needs a UN mandate before deploying its troops. It is foreseen that the EU battlegroups should be deployable within 10-15 days but getting a UN Security Council Resolution passed usually takes longer... under a defence act of 1954, Irish troops cannot be sent abroad for training, while having foreign troops in the country may breach the Irish Constitution... These revelations are set to be an embarrassment for the Irish government at the EU level as it had been part of the original decision to set up battlegroups.

Ireland is very wise to stay out of the battlegroups. Thankfully they won't have Jack Chirac sending them into wars.

The absolute idiocy and unmitigated folly of the whole European Union project is being revealed on a daily basis for all to see. Nothing good, and I mean nothing, will come of this European fiasco. It will unravel quicker than the Soviet Union!

I never knew that either, Mo1. Of course, if it's something negative about another country or the UN, I only read about it on FR.
