What's the newest word getting into the dictionary for the new year? Miriam Webster's editors announce it is "blog" defined as "a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer."
So hoist a glass to toast perhaps the most famous "blogger" of 2004 a brilliant Atlanta lawyer nicknamed "Buckhead." He's the pajama-clad fellow, along with a follow-up host of other Internet truth seekers, who struck a telling blow at anchor Dan Rather and his CBS TV "60 Minutes II" by quickly analyzing and questioning the proportionally spaced fonts used in the so-called National Guard records of George W. Bush.
"Buckhead" who's real name is Harry MacDougal spends many a wee hour on his computer surfing the "blogosphere." The Georgian first challenged CBS in a posting on the FreeRepublic.com Web site. "I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old," he wrote barely four hours after Mr. Rather's Sept. 8 show unveiled its "scoop." Within minutes, other bloggers were using their Internet superhighway to further analyze the typefaces not known to have been used in 1972 typewriters to reinforce my friend's suspicions and to tweak aggressive news outlets into doing some investigative reporting.
A few days later, as establishment media experts were finally weighing in against a smug and defiant Mr. Rather (who apologized 14 days later), one exultant FreeRepublic.com groupie declared in a succinct posting: "Buckhead for the U.S. Supreme Court."

You must feel like a proud parent when you read articles like this one.
I love it.
I want so more of it
Wow, I knew this site was special years go. There really are some very smart people here. I love learning and sharing. Thanks again to Jim Robinson.
Figured this was worth repeating.
Kudos to JimRob, Buckhead, and all of US, every last keyboard commando out here in blogger land that pass the info along! We have the enemy on the run!
BRAVO ZULU!

Another famous freeper. Kewl
I have seen Freepers utterly deconstruct fatuous New York Times editorials within 18 minutes of their electronic publication. Howard Freeman has run up the white flag. We are indeed winning -for now and until some issue comes along which will enable the MSM to rationalize another jihad.
Garsh.
Great article, best so far. But i had thought Buckheads post was only about 20 minutes after the show aired, not four hours.
Bottom line-- congratulations Jim ;-).
Some well deserved recognition! Thanks, Jim, for providing the place where history was made!!!
Imagine what you have done on a shoestring budget compared to this:
January 20 is going to be a fabulous day...Thank you for all you've done to help make this happen.
If memory serves, there was some confusion involving time zones and such. In fact I recall several conspiracy theory threads over at DUh (I'm sorry but Shadenfruede with DUhers as the subject is a guilty pleasure of mine.) where they tried to show Buckhead posted BEFORE the piece even aired. Someone finally figured out the time zone thing and then the threads got really weird.
Kudos, Buckhead!!! And, FreeRepublic!
It was posted just before midnight EDT, a few hours after 60 Minutes in the east.
I wonder if CBS has learned the wrong lesson from this to not post the source documents on the internet to be reviewed by pajama-clad amateurs?
< Namely, a blog is an online opinion posted for discussion, and not a web 'journal'. >
Au contraire. I think this article is the first to "get" the distinction between blog and website. It's nice to finally see something reported correctly.
The truly dark side of modern liberalism can be seen in the rise of a "politically correct" news media. It has not been receptive to political conservatives and our traditional Judeo-Christian culture and it has gone out of its way in recent years to condone and even glorify everything from drug use to same-sex marriage. Since the culturally corrosive Woodstock era, the "old media" led by CBS and the New York Times increasingly mocked traditional values and lifestyles as outmoded, racist and intolerant. Their unofficial motto evolved from that 1969 rock/drug/sex festival "If it feels good, do it."Well done, Jim, Buckhead, TankerKC, and Howlin.
In 2004 the "Buckheads" of America pushed back in a counter-revolution.
When the sun rises and the street lights go off, the world will be seen as a better place! Thanks to you!
From a longtime lurker (Feb. of 1998) and very infrequent poster, many thanks.

It just shows that god given intelligence is better than 65 million dollars of belly button lint between the ears of a cute face.
Thanks guys and ladies.
Damn, Buckhead, pretty soon you're gonna hafta hire a manager. I volunteer to be the first of your entourage. ;P
Dear Buckhead ... were you contacted as part of the SeeBs probe - or perhaps did they finally realize that your post stood on its own with no further need of explanation, despite the best efforts of MSM to impugn your motives?
The only thing keeping the MSM alive now is the very, very old (who do not access the web) and the very out of it types who never will access the web. When they are gone, the web will have all the focus. It will be interesting. The MSM can stay where they are to sell Chevrolets or something.
I remember posting on that famous thread that night and reading "Buckhead's" famous analysis. Is the thread still on file in the archives of FR anywhere?
Tanker appox. four hours earlier than Buckhead.
"We need to see those memos"

Karl, that IS a good question. I'm sure they're not going to help the bloggers out like that again. However, if they refused to make their so-called hard "evidence" available for scrutiny, their motives would certainly be under a great deal more suspicion. . and the "evidence", if hidden, would collapse under the sheer weight of their scrutiny avoidance. They can't win at that game, which they know, if they've thought it through.
It is not a blog. It is much much more.
I disagree.
Has the Smithsonian asked for the pajamas yet?
That's exactly why FR is the number one source of news and information.
That should be comming up real soon now with the Inaugural Ball.

"Garsh."
Garsh?! This from "a brilliant Atlanta lawyer?!" Garsh?!
LOL! Your reponse has made my morning!
Buckhead, you humble soul you, thanks for making America a better place!
Sweet. What is great is that the "New Media" is only getting stronger and more credible, the reverse being true for the lamestream presstitution racket. Even better: it is only going to get worse for the latter. Think dinosaurs. Hehehehe....
I also picked out this very paragraph for highlighting. It is so true and can be seen on most every hourly news update and on my local 10 p.m. news.
Without your perseverance and dedication, Free Republic would not exist and there would likely be no other forum to expose the brazen deceit of the left.
We'll be CELEBRATING 2 VICTORIES next week, how sweet it is :^)...rto
I took a walk down memory lane by linking to famous post 47 by Buckhead, then following the link to CBS.com and the 'originals' of the faked memos (if that makes any sense!).
CBiaS amazingly still has the link up; however it's amazing how the original posted story is loaded with subsequent mea culpas now. Lots of fun enjoying the schadenfreud!
See post #21 for a link; it's still there!
All things being otherwise the same, I believe if Buckhead and the others had not exposed this lie and/or the Swiftboat Vets had not been so thoughtful and persistent with the truth, this country would have been inaugurating John F.Kerry on January 20. So from the depths of my heart I want to thank Buckhead,Jim,John O'Neall, and the other freepers who love this country more than we can know. Free Republic changed the course of history. Free Republic may be responsible for allowing a George Bush rather than a John Kerry to appoint 3-5 Supreme Court justices and give direction to this country for the next 40-50 years. We will never know the degree to which Free Republic has managed to keep this Republic Free.
So now we're "groupies" ??
Screen captures work for most things, even if the "news" source doesn't post the goods online.
Congrats, again, to Buckhead, Howlin and Tanker!
