Conference ads target gays

Billboards tout a Christian alternative to homosexuality

Billboards displayed throughout Galveston County and south Houston targeting homosexuality have sparked concerns from at least one gay and lesbian group.

The advertisements, which depict either a smiling man or woman, bear the message, "I questioned homosexuality. Change is Possible. Discover how."

The billboards are in promotion of the evangelical Christian group Focus on the Family's "Love Won Out" conference scheduled for Feb. 19.

"The conference is meant to help people understand what causes homosexuality and how to prevent it," said B. Joe Cline, a Galveston resident who organized advertising effort that uses 15 billboards.

The billboards, however, have drawn the ire of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Houston. A spokeswoman for the gay advocacy groups denounced the campaign, describing the effort as "lies" and "myths."

"For an organization to spend their time and money promoting untruth and lies against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders is a deplorable situation. Our children are perfectly fine the way they are," said Sue Null, an advocacy chairwoman with PFLAG.

Null, the mother of a gay son and lesbian daughter, said Focus on the Family's claims are not plausible, especially when it says intense religious pressure can change a person's sexual orientation.

Cline said speakers will include a former homosexual, who is now married with two children, and a former lesbian.

Cline said he got involved with ministry for homosexuals, because his son, who is now heterosexual, once was gay.

"People who are in homosexuality are there because of a disconnect or a gender identification that has not matured," said Cline, 73, a recently retired financial planner and 28-year Galveston resident.

Null said her group is considering ways to respond to the billboard campaign.

Cline said he did not know how many people next month's conference will draw. Though he is aware of opposition to the conference, Cline said he does not expect the event to be disrupted.

"The people who want a way out of (homosexuality) and the people who want to go ahead and work through that, that's who we're out to help," he said.

Cline said the billboard ads were paid by private donors and Christian groups.

Excuse me 'lady', as a free American I can spend my time and money saying anything I want and your assumption of untruths and lies is just that.

The left isn't up to speed yet on the whole "free speech" thing yet.

I know several people who claim this worked for them.

Someone is living in denial IMO. I would consider myself an abject failure as a parent under those circumstances. If she wants to respond she can pay for her own damn billboards.

Truth can have an amazing effect on some people. Exodus International has been ministering to those enslaved by homosexuality for a long time. I am glad to see this approach.

Ms. Null, so far as I can tell (I haven't seen the billboards), the organization is presenting the fact that for those who are oriented toward the same sex and find the lifestyle unfulfilling, an alternative exists. It's a stance that's very pro-choice, if you will.

You can quadruple the number of patrons if you turn the bar stools upside down!

Aw, too bad… What about all of the "lies" and "myths" spread around by the homosexuals that have “drawn the ire” of the normal population?

Null said her group is considering ways to respond to the billboard campaign

What about trying to change? If it works then there were really no "lies" and "myths." As a bonus all those who successfully changed get to enjoy normal lives.

Though he is aware of opposition to the conference, Cline said he does not expect the event to be disrupted.

I am sure the Christians arrested in Philadelphia didn’t expect to be jailed or charged with felonies either

Focus on the Family makes no such claim. I don't know if the Houston Chronicle got it wrong or if the PFLAG spokeswoman did, but this is misinformation, especially in light of the accusations of "lies" and "myths."

To all: Two years ago, tired of decades long agony of NOT ever wanting to be homosexual, but leading a double life, I attended a Love Won Out Conference... and God's Love does indeed win out! These billboards tell THE truth, that's why they are hated by the "tolerance" bigots. If any of you Freepers ever want to see and hear the real truth, go to one of the LWO conferences. Lives are changed, and people are freed from the lies. I was, thanks be to God!

Heck of a name, Null.

I'm sick of the way people like this always twist what ministries like this do. No one is forcing people to go to these conferences, people go of their own free will. Of course, that is the very thing that Null would like to stop.

Not everyone is happy living in the homosexual lifestyle. That is a fact. And I'm quite sure that a lot of the people who say they are happy are not. Null would like all of those who are miserable to remain miserable just so she can preach her message that there's no way out.

And what the heck is it with this transgender thing? How in the world can you look at a person who wants to have his genitals removed and say that's normal. Given, there could be some things going on in a persons body that we don't understand, but I don't think that bodily mutilitation is the solution.

As for changing, there are failures, even in a religious atmosphere. The idea is not to become a heterosexual, to become straight, though that may happen. The idea is to get right with God. If people set their sights too high, they're going to see themselves as failures if they don't make it. At that point they'll probably fall back into their old ways, ways that are comfortable.

I think that people have to have the right mindset to change as well. It's like when you tell someone you're sorry when you're really not. You may say you're going to change, but deep down you think, I really like this, I'll just fool around a little bit. That little bit becomes more and more until finally you give up and say the system failed you, instead of you failing.

The big problem that Null has is that her worldview depends on homosexuality being innate. That gives them a leg up (so to speak) in getting non-discrimination legislation passed. The worst enemy of her kind is people like John Paulk and Stephen Bennett.

Speaking of Paulk, the homosexual groups went nuts when he walked into that gay bar in DC or wherever. Would they tell an alcoholic that fell off the wagon to give it up and just accept the fact that he's an alcoholic? Mind you there is more evidence for alcoholicism being genetic than homosexuality. Paulk fell off the wagon, big whoop.

If things continue like Null wants, we'll have states like Illinois that have passed legislation that protects a group of people because of their BEHAVIOR.

Rolling Stone mag has a right to reject bible ads and this Christian group has a right to buy billboard adverts promoting it's beliefs.

This bee-otch needs to shut up and sit down.

Praise the Lord!! Thanks for sharing that! We know the truth and we know the homosexual lobbyists want to hide that truth and stamp it out.
