Manufacturing expands: 20 straight months
AP

Posted on 02/01/2005 7:13:04 AM PST by SoFloFreeper

NEW YORK (AP) -- The manufacturing sector grew for the 20th consecutive month in January, though at a moderated pace, a private research group reported Tuesday, affirming the rebound in activity at the nations' factories.

The Institute for Supply Management said that its index measuring manufacturing activity declined to 56.4 in January, from a revised reading of 57.3 in December. The January figure was slightly below the reading of 57 anticipated by analysts.

A reading of 50 or above in the index means the manufacturing sector is expanding, while a figure below 50 represents a contraction.

Not true. This index is based on a survey.
Only those factories that remain open are included.
As factories continue to shut-down and relocate offshore, they are dropped from the survey, falsely skewing and inflating the index for those that remain.

This insourcing is reprehensible. We must achieve balance or we'll never get respect from the rest of the world. :)Hehe!

Actually, you are right, even though you intended to be sarcastic.
"Insourcing" (Direct Foreign Investment in the U.S.) has plummetted by 80% since Dubya first took office.

China beats US as top investor choice
US drops out of world's 10 freest economies list, says WSJ

The Administration's trade and economic policies are responsible for making our domestic environment MORE HOSTILE to business investment. As a result, more businesses (and jobs) continue to relocate offshore.

Willie is absolutely correct. We need to get back to the good old days of the 1950's when we produced much more and didn't buy anything from those nasty foreigners. As you can see from the graph, the 1950's were much better...err...never mind.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your point Willie.

If domestic "goods production" has increased as a share of GDP, why has it become so difficult to find "Made in the USA" in any of the doggone stores???

McJobs mistake / Sorry, but burger flipping isn't manufacturing

Don't let the facts get in the way of your point Willie.

It's glaringly obvious that your "facts" are intended to mislead the gullible and uninformed.

This article is entirely fiction. There is no more manufacturing in the United States. NONE!

or so I keep hearing

Maybe you need some new American made glasses?

It's glaringly obvious that your "facts" are intended to mislead the gullible and uninformed.

My facts were from the US Department of Commerce. Feel free to get your own facts from the US Department of Commerce that prove mine were incorrect. It should be easy, even for you, since all our factories are shutting down and moving offshore.

Your disingenous spin is so outlandish that it doesn't pass "the smell test".
In a nutshell, I've got better things to do than waste my time refuting your nonsense.

Willie, you can bitch and complain all you want and claim that manufacturing is on the decline in the US. But the hard facts are that there was more manufacturing activity in the US in 2004 than 2003. And more in 2003 than in 2002.

Celebration is premature.

Don't forget that China refuses to revalue the yuan, and there are 300 million more rural Chinese in poverty lusting after your job.

To put it bluntly, it is not "his job" and it is not "your job." It is the employers job.

Willie can't refute the facts from the US Department of Commerce , so he runs away like a little girl. Again. Typical.

No, the hard facts are that manufacturing employment fell from 17.263 million in Y2K to 14.379 million in '04.
That's a loss of 2.884 million jobs (16.7%)

Willie, you know you are being dishonest with your reply to me. I said that manufacturing activity increased, not employment in manufacturing.

And China has "lost" more manufacturing jobs than the US over the past 5 years. Who is China losing them too? Or is technology the main reason that fewer jobs are required to produce more goods?

for example:

U.S. Steel production:
1959: 62,124 (thousand short tons)
1998: 102,400 (thousand short tons)

hmmm, must be modernization/efficiency

so he runs away like a little girl.

Actually, YOU were the first to flinch when you dodged my question: "why has it become so difficult to find "Made in the USA" in any of the doggone stores???" The trouble is, you don't have the common sense to know when you've been whooped.
