BOISE, Idaho A proposal to ban same-sex marriages has been defeated for the second consecutive year in Idaho (search).
The measure was defeated 14-21 in the state Senate on Wednesday after conservative supporters couldn't muster the two-thirds majority needed to send the constitutional change to a vote of the people. Eight Republican senators joined with six Democrats to form a blockade of moderates.
The amendment would have invalidated any type of marriage or civil union (search) except those between one man and one woman.
The issue has been at the forefront of legislative issues since the session began Jan. 10, dividing friends, colleagues and even the Republican Party leadership.
Proponents have argued they are trying to protect traditional marriage from liberal, activist judges who want to expand the definition of marriage.
Opponents say the state should not discriminate against an entire class of people based on their sexual preference, and they also argue that the legislation is unnecessary and mean-spirited because gay marriage is already prohibited by law.

What say you, VKs? I smell something here....
Doesn't Idaho already have marriage laws that describe marriage correctly? Probably they are not voting against gay marriage ban because they think they already have it covered, and besides, they don't want to face any more bigotry charges from the media.
Can some Idahoan please explain?
Idaho has a relatively large contingent of libertarians.
"Why are you being mean to me?"
"I'm telling mom!"
Because too many frustrated lib/dem losers have been trashing up the place lately.....
Tell us why you think making gay marriage legal would make the world a better place?
If?

Translation: "I have no moral standards whatsoever. I wish everyone would be more like me."
Gay marriage is a complete ruse. Most gays/lesbians aren't even interested in it. The real goal is to dilute the meaning of "marriage." The homosexual lobby is intent on destroying the family, nothing more and nothing less.
Intolerance for barely-disguised war against the crucial institution of the family is no vice.
Conservatism in the North-West has a more libertarian orientation than, for example, in the South. This vote is not a big suprise to me.
Enjoy your stay here.
I have a feeeeeeeling that it will be a short one....

First of all, gays are not being told they can't get married, they just can't marry somebody of the same sex. Therefore, they are not being discrimated against anymore than somebody who wants to marry two wives or two husbands is being discriminated against. Do you think that also should be legal?
Well I live in the NW, and the conservatives here are every bit as conservative as elsewhere. The only problem in Wash. State is we ain't in power. IN Idaho, there is no excuse.
