YES, I KNOW KERRY SAID 'DELIVERED WEAPONS TO THE KHMER ROUGE'

Many TKS readers are asking about this odd comment by Kerry:

SEN. KERRY: I still have the hat that he gave me, and I hope the guy would come out of the woodwork and say, "I'm the guy who went up with John Kerry. We delivered weapons to the Khmer Rouge on the coastline of Cambodia." Actually, looking back at the original article in which Kerry mentions the lucky hat, Kerry didn't quite specify the purpose of his mission with the man who wore the hat.

A close associate hints: There's a secret compartment in Kerry's briefcase. He carries the black attaché everywhere. Asked about it on several occasions, Kerry brushed it aside. Finally, trapped in an interview, he exhaled and clicked open his case.

"Who told you?" he demanded as he reached inside. "My friends don't know about this."

The hat was a little mildewy. The green camouflage was fading, the seams fraying.

"My good luck hat," Kerry said, happy to see it. "Given to me by a CIA guy as we went in for a special mission in Cambodia."

Kerry put on the hat, pulling the brim over his forehead. His blue button-down shirt and tie clashed with the camouflage. He pointed his finger and raised his thumb, creating an imaginary gun. He looked silly, yet suddenly his campaign message was clear: Citizen-soldier. Linking patriotism to public service. It wasn't complex after all; it was Kerry.

He smiled and aimed his finger: "Pow."

Of course, Kerry has said "I remember what it was like to be shot at by the Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians," suggesting that he was being shot at by the Khmer Rouge.

But James Robbins of NRO wondered about this:

could Kerry have come under fire from the Khmer Rouge and Cambodians? At the very least one wonders how he knew the identity of those who were shooting at him. The claim of having faced off with the Khmer Rouge is most suspect. In the period in question, Pol Pot's band was not very large, and was based mainly in the mountains in the northeast corner of the country. The Khmer Rouge did not become a major fighting force until 1970, when with Chinese and North Vietnamese support, they expanded from a few thousand to 100,000 fighters. Instapundit looked at the Khmer Rouge claims during the campaign, with many links.

The Powerline guys looked into this and concluded, "Different sources assign different dates to the beginning of military action by the Khmer Rouge, but we've seen no support for the proposition that the Khmer Rouge were in the field (as opposed to existing as a political organization) in January 1969."

Short version: I have no idea why Senator Kerry claimed on Sunday to have been on a mission to ferry weapons to the Khmer Rouge, the Communist army under the direction of Pol Pot.

The mission was so secret, he would have to kill himself if he actually knew about it.

Oh, oh, oh! Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! Let me tell him! Pleeeeeeze!

Still no good -- the real Kurtz was up in the jungle of the Belgian Congo (see Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad).

Had the Bin Laden tape not surfaced the weekend before the election, I strongly believe Kerry would have been elected. But the tape reminded enough people that the WoT and threat of Bin Laden were real that they voted for Bush.

Charles Krauthammer (sp) wrote an article right after the election and remarked on the irony that "...Osama bin Laden pulled his nemesis across the finish line."

Please someone of the period tell if the CIA would ever had included a man of Kerrys rank and duties in a covert gun running operation.

People who are supposed to know about such things have said that Kerry's claims are preposterous.

First off, an inexperienced junior officer such as Kerry would never have been asked to undertake such a sensitive mission.

Second, Swift boats were anything but stealthy -- very loud diesels and relatively deep draft. Insertion missions would have used something much smaller...and much, much quieter. Indeed, the CIA had a fleet of such boats for that specific purpose.

Kerry's tales are nothing more than an exercise in lily gilding, told by a fool.

And did you notice the look on his face when he said he was waiting for that CIA agent to come forward? It was "Please, Mr. Soros, find someone to come forward and say that he was that person".
If John Kerry was my son, I would slap the shit out of his mother.

None of those Democrats are good salesman. Gore and Kerry both look dishonest. Where can they find a sincere looking and sounding Democrat?

You hit the nail on the head. It just amazes me that the common man (or half of them) cannot see through the bullsh-t that he was pushing. He reminds me of those guys in the army that would get all the awards even though we did 100 percent of the work, and all they did was pose and kiss the commander's arse. It all catches up to you eventually and this is surely the case with this poser.

<< I thought John-boy delivered those munitions when he visited Paris......... >>

Nah.

He had to "go to Cambodia on a secret CIA Christmas-surprise to to gun-run for Pol Pot and the seven dwarves" -- everyone knows that!

In Paris the mongrel bastard delivered the lives of almost 60,000 brave American Men and of of the three million South-East Asians murdered as the direct consequence of his treason.
