Online Reporter Quits After Liberals' Expose
Washington Post ^ | 2/10/05 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 02/09/2005 9:41:27 PM PST by conservative in nyc

The conservative reporter who asked President Bush a loaded question at a news conference last month resigned yesterday after liberal bloggers uncovered his real name and raised questions about his background.

Jeff Gannon, who had been writing for the Web sites Talon News and GOPUSA, is actually James Dale Guckert, 47, and has been linked to online domain addresses with sexually provocative names. He has been under scrutiny since asking Bush how he could work with Senate Democratic leaders "who seem to have divorced themselves from reality." The information about Gannon was posted on the liberal sites Daily Kos, Atrios and World o' Crap.

Gannon's resignation highlights the no-holds-barred atmosphere of the Web, which both enabled him to function as a reporter--his stories appeared on a site founded by Texas Republican activist Bobby Eberle--and produced a swarm of critics determined to expose him.

Among the domain names registered by Gannon's company several years ago, but never launched, were Hotmilitarystud.com, Militaryescorts.com and Militaryescortsm4m.com, along with Exposejessejackson.com. The bloggers also have linked to a since-withdrawn America Online photo of a man who appears to be Gannon, posing in his underwear, with a screen name bearing the initials "JDG." Markos Moulitsas, a San Francisco liberal who writes the popular Kos site, said of Gannon: "He has been extremely anti-gay in his writings. He's been a shill for the Christian right. So there's a certain level of hypocrisy there that I thought was fair game and needed to be called out."

---SNIP---

Several White House correspondents say they saw Gannon wearing what appeared to be a permanent White House pass with his picture and pseudonym--legal names are generally required because of the Secret Service background check--and that McClellan sometimes called on Gannon when he wanted a softer question.

I had to stop right there; no doubt where Howie, fresh off defending Eason Jordan, is going with this one.

lol.. what a bunch of pussies these "paragons of virtue" and practitioners of 'impartial' reporting have become.

You don't want a fair fight, you just want to be declared the winner by default..

According to the Talon News website, they are actively seeking candidates.

I would apply if I actually was through college and gone to a journalism master's program.

However, I have school to worry about still. Based on Gannon's background, it does not appear that previous journalistic experience is a prerequisite for the job.

They seem obsessed with gays, don't they?

I recall them doing this same kind of smear job on Andrew Sullivan.

And it looks like they have Scot McClellan in their sights.

I suppose the lesson here is if you have something to hide, going in front of the public is the last place you should be.

What exactly is there for Jeff Gannon to hide, since you seem so familiar with him?

" What exactly is there for Jeff Gannon to hide,"

I must be missing something. What exactly did Gannon do that was so heinous ?
I mean other than being a conservative and asking a decent question at a presser, for once .
The White House Oppress Corps is nothing but a cabal of lefties who bait McClellan for that night's sound bite and quote- which is then dutifully taken out of context and distorted.
McClellan is like Lucy with the football, every single day.
Too bad Rumsfeld doesn't have a brother or son to come in and take charge of the briefings.

Washington Post has sunk to a new low for them. Making news out of trivia.

They are floundering. Blind leading the blind.

The ironic thing is, anyone who knew anything about "Gannon" knew that was not his real name. It's been known around FR for a long while, so it's not like they were busting CBS for faking up memos or anything.

They are fixated on gays, because many of the worst most radical lefties are gay. They claim they are only pointing out the "sexpocrisy" of (they claim) conservative gays.

One excuse is as good as another.

They're still fighting battles, with an expired arsenal, in a war they've already lost.
