  • Chavez: McChrystal No Loss for Conservatives

Conservatives should shed no tears over Gen. Stanley McChrystal's forced resignation as U.S. commander in Afghanistan this week. The man may have been a brilliant military strategist -- and is certainly a fine patriot -- but he exercised exceedingly poor judgment, which began long before he agreed to a Rolling Stone profile that got him fired. What's more, he squandered the chance to make a forceful case that the political calculus governing the Obama administration's Afghanistan policy endangers American lives and makes success less likely. McChrystal's first mistake was to vote for Barack Obama.

As the candidates for the GOP presidential nomination battle in debates and on the campaign trail, members of GOPUSA's Grassroots Survey Team have been asked throughout the past year to indicate their preferences on candidates and issues. The feedback has been amazing, and often indicates the direction being followed by other conservatives across the country. In GOPUSA's latest survey conducted on Thursday, there was significant movement by some presidential hopefuls. It appears that conservatives are paying attention to what is going on in the debates and in the early elections, and their preferences have certainly changed since the last GOPUSA...

    U. S. Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, has spent the better part of the last decade running for president. He actively sought the office in 2000 and lost handily to George W. Bush. Since that time, he has done everything he could think of to antagonize the base of his own party. Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-TN, acts as if the thought of running for president just occurred to him five minutes ago. Some days he acts as though it still hasn't occurred to him. For very different reasons, these two men, with their totally different approaches to politics, have probably...

What is happening to my Party? Posted by Bobby Eberle June 27, 2007 at 6:14 am If Tuesday’s vote to renew debate on the Senate’s immigration bill wasn’t a dagger through the heart of many Republicans, including myself, it was very close. Although it may not have been a fatal stab, the damage could very well be permanent. What our Republican “leaders” (and I use that term loosely) are failing to realize is that if they pander for political gain rather than doing what is right, we all lose. Add to that the open hostility being shown by some Republicans...

Draft Fred Thompson for President For the good of the conservative movement, GOPUSA urges former Sen. Fred Dalton Thompson to enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination. We need someone in the mold of Ronald Reagan who can bring the Republican Party together and lead through conservative principles. We, the undersigned, urge Mr. Thompson to enter the race to be the next president of the United States! Sincerely,

The planned boycott of American businesses on Monday by groups who support “rights” for illegal aliens has gained a new ally: the California Senate. In a mind-boggling move, the legislative body passed a resolution which supports the “Great American Boycott 2006.” In other words, the California Senate is siding with illegal aliens and against the overwhelming will of the American people. As noted by the Associated Press, “California’s state senators on Thursday endorsed Monday’s boycott of schools, jobs and stores by illegal immigrants and their allies…” The California Senate vote was along party lines, 24-13, but it really makes you...

Spending, Immigration Key Concerns for Conservatives Posted By Bobby Eberle On March 22, 2006 at 8:29 am Responses from our recent survey, “The Pulse of Grassroots Conservatives,” show that there is concern going into the 2006 elections. However, the primary causes of Republican frustration are easily identified and can be corrected by Republican leaders standing strong against the Democrats and staying true to core Republican principles. The survey was administered to the members of GOPUSA’s Grassroots Survey Team. The total number of respondents at time of writing is 2,367. Complete survey results can be found here. When asked to name...

(Talon News) -- A radical Islamic web site containing a death threat against a New Mexico-based Talon News writer remains on line at its Chicago-based Internet service provider -- at least for now. In a Friday phone call from Alex Korneyev, the owner of Host for Web (www.hostforweb.com), Talon News report Jeremy Reynalds understood him to say the site will be taken off line shortly. In a follow-up e-mail to Reynalds, Korneyev said the reason the site has remained available is "because we were working with ... law enforcement agencies." However, in the same e-mail, Korneyev emphasized to Reynalds, "I...

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer was so concerned about Talon News reporter James Guckert's potential ties to the Republican Party that he stopped calling on him at press briefings for about a week in 2003, Fleischer told E&P today. "I found out that he worked for a GOP site, and I didn't think it was my place to call on him because he worked for something that was related to the party," Fleischer said in a phone interview. "He had the editor call me and made the case that they were not related to the Republican Party. He...

The conservative reporter who asked President Bush a loaded question at a news conference last month resigned yesterday after liberal bloggers uncovered his real name and raised questions about his background. Jeff Gannon, who had been writing for the Web sites Talon News and GOPUSA, is actually James Dale Guckert, 47, and has been linked to online domain addresses with sexually provocative names. He has been under scrutiny since asking Bush how he could work with Senate Democratic leaders "who seem to have divorced themselves from reality." The information about Gannon was posted on the liberal sites Daily Kos, Atrios...

One of the most contentious issues facing America's political leaders, office holders, and candidates is that of immigration reform. While those on the political left generally consider immigration reform to be synonymous with amnesty programs for illegal aliens, these same activists ignore the fact that real immigration reform involves a deeper, more comprehensive look at how immigration policies influence homeland security (or the lack thereof). Unfortunately, in a recent editorial, the Wall Street Journal jumped into the immigration debate with a "hit piece" designed to paint opponents of President Bush's "guest worker" program as "anti-immigrant" while ignoring the true nature...

<p>Referring to Sen. Robert Byrd, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, who voted against civil rights legislation and who holds the distinction of being the only senator in U.S. history to vote against both Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court, Sen. Christopher Dodd said he "cannot think of a single moment in this nation's 220-plus year history where [Byrd] would not have been a valuable asset to this country."</p>

Sometimes words can mislead by lulling us to sleep when we should be awake. Utter the words, "Law of the Sea Treaty" (LOST), and watch people's eyes glaze over. When it comes to this treaty, the road warriors of the Left hope yours do, too. Don't let them. Keep reading. LOST, if ratified, would represent the single greatest loss of sovereignty in the history of America. It must be stopped. For our purposes, the LOST story begins in 1980, when Republicans condemned this Carter-era treaty in their national platform. It continues in 1981, when the treaty was sprung on President...

John Kerry stated that in his first 100 days in office he would increase the military by 40,000 troops. "In the face of grave challenges, our armed forces are spread too thin." This is pompous talk from a man running for president and running from his voting record. Kerry's desire to deplete the military is a long one. One has to go all the way back to 1972 to find his first plan to take funding from the military and redistribute it to social programs. In his failed race for the Congress, his speeches centered on a simple theme--he promised...
