What Has the Feminist Movement Done to Modesty -- And American Girls?
Human Events Online ^ | Feb. 16, 2005 | Linda Chavez

If you watch a lot of cable television, you've probably seen the ads, especially late at night or early in the morning. The "Girls Gone Wild" videos promise to show you coeds behaving badly on the beach during Spring Break or getting down and dirty at Mardi Gras. The formula is simple: find a group of nubile young things drunk out of their heads and induce them to pull up their T-shirts or pull down their shorts and expose themselves to anyone willing to fork over $19.95 for the privilege. The most recent incarnation features gangster rapper Snoop Dogg hawking fresh, young flesh.

Call me old-fashioned, but I just can't imagine what these girls were thinking when they agreed to "show off their assets," as one knock-off video boasts. These young women aren't pros -- they are not part of the pornographic underworld -- but ordinary teens and twenty-somethings who one day will be wives and mothers. One young girl, who was 17 at the time she allowed herself to be photographed topless, has already sued the producers of "The Guy Game," a video game featuring females in various stages of undress. Her suit claims she did not give a "valid or enforceable consent or release" for photos to be used by the video game makers. "Plaintiff is still a teenager and wishes to attend college, develop her career and be active in her community and church." Good luck.

What is most shocking about this phenomenon is that we're not all that shocked by it. Modesty used to be considered a natural female attribute. No more. Just take a look around next time you're at the mall.

Kids were having sex back in those "good ol' days," probably at about the same rate as today.

There was often a wedding ring involved. And I'm pretty sure you didn't have 14-15 year olds having orgies while their parents were at work (cf the lost children of rockdale county).

Only in Boston.

A vast majority of girls are lifting their shirts in public? Where do you live? I live in boring, old Los Angeles where the girls aren't nearly as wild as that.

The homestead of your own has ALWAYS been part of the american landscape. It is the cookie cuter neighborhood that is new.

The "house" extends back to the start and earlier of american property law.

The extendended family was an excellent idea which would be nice if we could figure a way to bring it back.

Pretty rare today, too. It happens, but not all that often.

"When I was in HS the boys had to swim in the nude"

No way, I do not believe that for an instant. I am not a young man can not imagine any school public or private even allowing nude swimming, and you are claiming the school forced nude swimming. Nope your statement is a flat out lie.

Actually, it's not. Lots of schools had naked swimming for boys. It's very well documented. Just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it didn't exist. The word "lie" is misused in your post.

The way they dress in high schools, their shirts are already 3 inches above their pants, and no imagination is required to figure out the rest of the story. That's everywhere in the US. The only schools where it isn't happening are those with uniforms or dress codes.

I wouldn't know. I know that it was unheard of back when mothers stayed at home, and when everyone had hard work to do when they got home from school -- if they were lucky enough to get to go to school at all.

Google "nude swimming school" (no quotes.) You'll find numerous accounts of this going on until at least the 1970's, both in high schools and universities.

Don't discount what another Freeper tells you without checking, and try not to call peoples posts lies.

The comparison is between the vast majority of the girls lifting their shirts in public (and usually doing worse in private) and a few bad apples doing worse in private.

Do you honestly think that the vast majority of girls are lifting their shirts in public?

Porn stars actually receive a paycheck for getting naked in front of a camera.

These girls do it for free! That is what I think I find most disturbing. The head of GGW has become a multi-millionaire by taking advantage of drunk girls who aren't even re-imbursed for what they did and likely wake up the next day hung-over, humiliated and full of remourse.

Sadly, the same "fashions" the 14yo are wearing has been filtering down to the kindergarten set.

%%%%

I first noticed this trend when five and six year olds tried to imitate the Spice Girls, who preceded Britney Spears by a few years.

Five year olds do not buy many clothes. Their mothers do, and unfortunately, a lot of mothers started to think that dressing their little girls like Spice Girls or whoever is on MTV is "cute."

To my mind, the trend got such a foothold because the mothers did not really think about what they were doing to their girls.

You mean by hearing or seeing their parents? Big whoop, they certainly weren't taught to act like sluts at 13.

As MineralMan pointed out in an earlier post, the so-called shotgun wedding used to be a pretty common event before the invention of reliable birth control. Girls weren't really more virtuous back in the old days due to some greater moral code, they were just more likely to get knocked up and married off.

In fact, IIRC the teen pregnancy rate is lower now than it was in the 1950's- not just among late teens (18-19) but among younger teens.

My daughter begs for regular blue jeans. The low rise ones just don't work for some slim girls. They fall off. She asks for the LL Bean ones that "go in at the waist." Not only are they more modest, they actually make girls look shapelier.

Funny thing is, she's not at all mocked at school for dressing in LL bean jeans and long prarie skirts. Her friends ask me where they can get clothes like that.

For the skirts, I buy them about four sizes too large, and take them in, or at least cinch them at the waist. I also buy her shirts two sizes too big when necessary, or I buy them at LL Bean, Land's End or Talbot's.
