Churchill Art Piece Called Into Question

by CBS4 News reporter Raj Chohan

Feb 24, 2005 8:03 pm US/Mountain BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) Boulder County resident Duke Prentup has been a fan of native American art for as long as he can remember. That love of art took him to the home of Ward Churchill in the early 1980's, where Prentup bought several pieces of Churchill's art, including a serigraph titled "Winter Attack."

"I have enjoyed them ever since immensely, they're obviously up inside my house," Prentup said.

Last month came a stunning revelation, though, as as Prentup flipped through a 1972 book called The Mystic Warriors of the Plains written and illustrated by the late artist Thomas E. Mails. He found a sketch that was strikingly similar to the Churchill piece.

(Excerpt) See the rest of the article, and photo comparisons of the 2 pieces of art here: http://news4colorado.com/topstories/local_story_055200531.html

It's actually gotten me to look up some of the art work of my first cousin, twice removed, Woodrow Wilson (Woody) Crumbo. Always new he was a NA artist. Now I've actually seen some of his work.

The latest photos used by Wart remind me of photos used to identify/document the tribes in the 19th Century....There are hundreds of them and I don't imagine they would be under any copyright laws, are probably in public domain by now.

The University of Colorado guys have more than enough on Churchill by now. By early March they have the ruling? Will be interesting to see that result. Get him the heck out of there!

Oh, brother. Ping to post #349 to see the side-by-side comparisons. Since you probably don't have time to read the replies on this thread, other highlights that have been posted are: A few more forged/copied "lithographs" from Churchill, plus auctions on eBay for some of these "original" lithographs going for $250+.

As a professional graphic artist, I say this is outright plagiarism!

"It's an original work by me, after Thomas Mails ... the fact that the purchaser was ignorant of the reality of what was perfectly publicly stated at the time the edition was printed is not my responsibility," Churchill said."

Even if he stated he copied the other artist's illustration, HE STILL COPIED! This is out and out plagiarism.

Any time you copy someone else's photo for your artwork, without their permission, it's PLAGIARISM.

When you find it, copy it, blur it a little and add some color.

Not as cool as Mr. Pan, but art, nonetheless.

I got bored with that. I created some original art depicting Brer Churchill
in Vietnam, on the riverside, under fire with his pals.

Watch for me on Ebay!

Very nice!

Be sure to choose an ethnic group to be a member of to add to the value.

Here's the listing description:

The item up for auction now is a very striking and impressive serigraph/lithograph by renowned Native American author and artist, Ward Churchill ( Keetoowah Band Cherokee).

Churchill is Professor Emeritus of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, and is the Coordinator of American Indian Studies at the same institution. He is also Associate Director of the Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America and Co-Director of the Colorado Chapter of the American Indian Movement. Additionally he is a member of the American Indian Anti-Defamation Council and the author of many books and scholarly publications.

An accomplished artist in his own right, the work up for auction now is entitled "Winter Attack". It measures 27" wide by 20" tall and is very nicely framed. Signed by the artist, lower right, it is marked "A.P." for Artists Proof.

The image is laid on rag paper and the maker's watermark is embossed in the lower right corner. This piece is in excellent conditon with no foxing, wrinkling or damage of any kind. It was purchased at a prestigious gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico many years ago and has been well cared for in a prominent art collection in the Denver, Colorado area.

The image is a very stark and compelling one that evokes a sense of isolation and resignation at the same time, yet is elegant. One of the finer pieces by this controversial, but important artist, it would be the perfect addition to the Native American or Ethnic art collection.

Please excuse the reflections in the images below, the piece presents beautifully in person! Buyer to pay $27.50 shipping in the Continental USA, International ship = more $$, inquiries are welcome ask early and often as all sales are final.

Drat. I can't find the photo now and I've quickly flipped through most of my books. I couldn't find the one photo I was thinking of which could be similar, either, in the time I had, so perhaps I'm wrong and this is a composite of more than one photo.

"maybe he copied some of her works, too?"

The question here is, who did she copy HER works from?
She was an affirmative action hothouse orchid who was incapable of rational thought, much less creating serious books.
