A tight race in L.A., but does anyone care? In battle for mayor, not much interest

The race for mayor of America's second-largest city is down to the wire and after months of tough campaigning, the three leading candidates are in a virtual dead heat. So with his career on the line, the incumbent, Mayor James Hahn, put everything into his closing swings at the final debate this week: "If you want leadership in this city, I'm your guy!"

In the most recent Los Angeles Times poll, Villaraigosa, 52, a former state Assembly speaker and labor organizer who narrowly lost to Hahn four years ago, was the choice of 24 percent. He was followed by Hertzberg, 50, another former Assembly speaker who is running strongest in the largely white San Fernando Valley, with 21 percent. Hahn, with a campaign theme of quiet competence, was the choice of 20 percent.

They are all Democrats. In my assessment, Herzberg is the lesser of the three evils, while Villaraigosa is the worst -- being the worst leftist, and Hahn is somewhere in the middle.

But I was surprised to find a couple of messages on my answering machines from someone claiming to Republican leader (the name was not clear on the message) strongly advocating against Herberg. So what do they want, elect a real leftist, by electing Villaraigosa?!

I wonder why we didn't have a strong moderate Republican running, someone similar to Richard Riordan -- why are Republicans abandoning Los Angeles to the Democrats?

Great. More of the "let's destroy the place, in order to save it" crowd.

Riordan did a fantastic job, he ran LA like a business, he was a welcome change, too bad that all we have now are Democrats, one more corrupt than the other.

yeah, i liked riordan.

but people on this forum did not.

herzberg would be my choice.

never did like the hahn bro' and sis'. the old man hahn was quite a hero to the black community. this country passes political offices on to wives and children as if they were european royalty.

To paraphrase things "demand for perfection is the enemy of the possible".

No "pure conservative" will get elected state wide in CA, and especially not citywide in Los Angeles.

A moderate Republican, who is pragmatic, but fiscally conservative and business oriented is infinitely better for CA and LA, than a bunch of liberal Democrats, who are the only alternatives.

LA is not a city. It's a mess in transition. There is no "there" there. The mayor's job is mostly posing for pr photos. He has zero powers. His opposition is a pack of clowns in different flavors. The whole thing is a bad joke.
The most amusing thing is reading "expert observers" commenting authoritatively about something that doen't exist.

I live in Los Angeles, and it did make a difference, when Riordan was mayor, he attended to business.

The tyrannical city council really runs Los Angeles...Quite naturally they are focused on raising taxes, adding fees to every imaginable human transaction, regulating snacks for children and adults, preserving a collapsing education and hospital system for illegals, eliminating the cross from the county seal, and, most important, preserving kickbacks for themselves...(sigh).

Man, you Californicators seem REALLY SCARED of Villaraigosa. He seems like just another Lefty to me, much like Jim "I Kiss bl-ck ass then f-ck them over" Hahn.

Be nice to people who believe the Mayor of LA does anything except manage Press Agentry. They probably believe a real passenger jet crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11 too.

Here's a link to Hertzberg's resume that also shows him as a member of the board of directors of Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (Maldef). He also campaigned for Villaraigosa and was his roommate. As assemblyman, he employed Cruz Bustamante's brother. A vote for Hertzberg is a vote for Villaraigosa in disguise.

Well, I'm not in the city, so I don't get to vote (nor do I have to decide, lol).
If I could, I'd vote for Moore or Parks.

Villaraigosa is a La Raza racist. He wanted drivers licenses and free citizenship for all illegals.

I think he should be retired from everything, not made mayor.

"Hertzberg is the best of the rotten barrel."

Thanks for confirming it. That's what I think. It's a shame that we didn't have someone of the caliber of Riordan running.
