Schiavo’s father makes emotional appeal

PINELLAS PARK, FL -- Bob Schindler, the father of severely brain-damaged Terri Schiavo, said his daugher is "begging for help," and so is her family.

Now in her 11th day without food or water after her feeding tube was removed under court order on March 18, Schiavo is "failing," he said, but nevertheless "fighting like hell to live."

Although "emaciated," Schiavo is "still communicating," Schindler said, "... And she's responding to me."

Schindler spoke to reporters shortly before 1 p.m. outside the Woodside Hospice, where Schiavo is being cared for.

Several days ago, a family spokesman reported that Terri's mother, Mary Schindler, was so upset at her daughter's appearance that she because physically ill at the bedside. Schiavo's brother, Bobby Schindler, said that her condition was so alarming he was suggesting his parents not go see her.

Bob Schindler said today that he was "scared to death to go in to see her, for fear of what I'd see." But, he said, "she has amazing endurance, what she's been through for this past week. And it's incredible to see how she's acting."

David Gibbs, the family lawyer, had said earlier that Schiavo was past the point that she could have her feeding tube reinserted, but the family disputed it.

Gibbs also said she was receiving morphine. Schindler said he had "a grave concern that they'll expedite the process to kill her with an overdose of morphine."

Legal options seem to have run out for the Schindlers. But Schindler called again upon government leaders and the courts to intervene.

"I plead again that the powers that be don't give up on her," he said. "She has to be saved. She has to be saved. And it can be done. And we plead for her."

I want to see a good ol' fashioned federal raid on that Hospice. Get her out of that hell hole!!!

That would be illegal.

The President or the Governor can write an executive order to get Terri into a hospital immediately. It is not breaking any law to do so. This action would not interfere with the judge. And since Greer already flaunted a Congressional subpoena his ruling is highly questionable.

Executive orders are lawful. They've been written by presidents ever since Washington on a number of different issues.

Contacting the president and ask him to write an executive order immediately. If you cannot reach him, then contact your state senators and representatives.

I can't speak for Terri's parents, but my guess is that they privately abhor people like you.

"You didn't read my comment, obviously. I would like to know the father's thoughts...not yours."

Then go and ask HIM, if you have the guts.

Michael Schiavo is NOT on his sign? It must be an error.

Guts? Why in the world would that take guts?

I had a sincere desire to know exactly what action the father would like to be taken. What's wrong with you?

I don't know what the poor father wants, but I e-mailed Joe Liberman, my senator. I'm a Rep., but Joe, as demonstrated by the Bush kiss, is a man of compasssion.

Call Joe Lieberman , and ask him to lead a national bipartisan Mercy Coalition. .

What, exactly, do you expect Joe Lieberman to do?

His daughter is being killed by order of the man who promised to love, honor, and cherish her. I'd be damn near insane too.

Yep, sort of like what Janet Reno did, not once, but twice.

AND, DCF could legally do it.

Not any more they can't. And we should not be emulating Janet Reno.

That is just rude, and I've come to expect some pretty rude stuff from you.

Until your daughter is starved by the man who promised to love her always, so you can demonstrate how you'd "settle this privately" and "let her go in peace," STFU.

They would have to intravenously hydrate her first than insert a feeding tube and slowly reintroduce feedings!

That might make a valid point should the fluid reduction have occured closer to the time of the injury but after years and year, the damaged areas have calcified.

But then what? I'm all for anything that will save Terri, but will the State of Florida then have custody of her indefinitely? How will Florida be able to ignore the courts completely and kick Michael out as guardian?

There was a doctor who suggested doing just that (I don't recall his name), but Michael Schiavo said "no."
