TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Legal setbacks for Terri Schiavo's parents continue even after the brain-damaged woman's death.

The Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office denied the parents' request to have independent medical experts observe Schiavo's autopsy has been denied.

Over their seven-years-long legal battle, Bob and Mary Schindler sought independent investigation of their daughter's condition. They wanted to select a neuropathologist and a forensic expert to observe her autopsy.

The autopsy was completed yesterday. Results are not expected for several weeks.

Terri Schiavo's body was cremated today. Her husband plans to bury her remains in a family plot in Pennsylvania. He is required to tell the Schindlers about any memorial services he plans for her, and where the ashes are interred.

The Schindlers have planned their own memorial service for their daughter Tuesday night in Gulfport.

You are so right!
"Sorry. I disagree. There is widespread 'facilitation of the death process' taking place every day in hospices and nursing homes. Florida has the most at stake with their millions of elderly. This is not an isolated case"

If Terri's parents had not fought for her life, she would have been murdered with no one even knowing.

There is no plan in the US to exterminate a race or class of people.

Florida laws were changed to allow the starvation of Terri Schindler (Schiavo). Which seems more likely:

  1. People went through all that trouble just to murder one woman
  2. People went through all that trouble so they could murder more people
Call me a conspiracy theorist if you must, but people who go through that much trouble generally have some motive. Motive #2 sounds much more plausible than motive #1. Can you offer any other motive you'd find more plausible still?

"There may be a "slippery slope" aspect here, I'll grant you that."

That's exactly what I take away from the analogies, it's not the numbers that are relevant - but the common way it all began, beginning with disabled, "damaged" people not worth keeping alive. How do you think it begins? You're correct, that is the only commonality; but indeed one we cannot hide away and refuse to face.

"There is no effort underway to exterminate disabled people."

You could very well be right, but I'm not entirely sure - and that is enough to scare me.

I do not imply in any way that the Nazis only exterminated Jews. They did murder other "useless" human beings such as the disabled, but their ultimate goal in which they almost succeeded was the extermination of the Jewish race. 6 million were killed. Men, women, children, alike regardless of their religious observance. They were murdered simply because they had a sufficient amount of Jewish blood. There was no escape from the Nazis even if you were only part Jewish. The extermination of Jews was their ultimate goal.

Being elderly and disabled might make one a target if there is no surviving loving family. But it is not an automatic death sentence as being a Jew in Germany, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Belgium, etc was during the Reign of Hitler. There is a difference.

Would you rather be an elderly Jew in a Florida nursing home in 2005, or a healthy Jewish child in Poland in 1940? Take your pick.

The extermination of Jews was their ultimate goal.

They would have had to have taken over the world, or most of it, and hunt down every last Jew. I've no doubt they were diabolical enough to do that. There were many Jews in the US and Canada, don't know about other countries. Russia had many Jews, some Western ones were exterminated in the death camps, some they didn't get at, but were driven out by the persecution in Russia. Many US Jews came from Russia.

We should/could have taken in more. I haven't forgotten that we turned away a shipload full of them.

Then then there were some that got deported into Siberia from Germany or Poland. I had a book about it once and how the living conditions were for them there. Now I can't remember how they managed that since they never completely took over Russia.

It's late, and I apologize for oversimplifying a complex matter.

It seems to me that a lot of this was hidden from the American people at the time, and I never understood why.

I think your point is well taken, not only with regard to this thread, but in general. NOTHING could compare with the Nazi atrocities in the 30's and 40's. And as a Jew, I've always found comparisons of isolated cases with anything Nazi related tasteless.

As for the Schiavo case and the "slippery slope", I'm not so sure we're headed in that direction either. But there is much more to the Schiavo story than we know now, I believe it will come out sooner or later. The question is how "over the top"is it to request that an independent expert witness an autopsy in Pinellas County? Is there a precedent for it? It seems to me to refuse such a reasonable request, given the unanswered questions about this case raises suspicion that someone is trying to hide something here.

If you just dispassionately look at all the actions Michael Schiavo with his scuzzy lawyer have been taking in the past few years, there needs to be a thorough investigation of Michael Schiavo. And one more question: What kind of reputation does the ME of Pinellas Cty. have? I think that's also important.

Would you rather be an elderly Jew in a Florida nursing home in 2005, or a healthy Jewish child in Poland in 1940? Take your pick.

The key was in your first sentence, having a surviving loving family who could oversee your care.

It's not an easy choice, and I don't mean to be crass. Florida does not sound like a healthy place to be elderly or disabled in, but that is by no means the only place. Something could happen so your loving kin would not be there for you as you plan or hope. There are many elderly who have no living kin or irresponsible kin all over the country.

Many are dying alone and unloved by anyone. Some have children who have forgotten them or have taken no repsonsibility for them, and social services has to find housing for them, etc.

Poland was probably worse. In either place, you couldn't be sure who wouldn't turn you in though. It has NOT come to that by any means.

What you say is all true and very relevant. There does need to be a thorough investigation of Michael Schiavo, Felos, Greer. etc. And I do not know anything about the ME of Pinellas County but my suspicions are alerted when a representative for the Schindler family is barred. That stinks to high heaven.

We can still condemn this and raise questions without invoking the unique evil that was Nazi Germany. Can't we?

Schindler attorney David Gibbs told Reuters Saturday that the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's office refused their request.

Gee, I wonder why!

***

I heard Dr. Wecht on Jim Quinn's radio show on Friday morning, he stated on the air that he asked for "professional courtesy" to observe the autopsy and was denied.

Yes, I heard it too. This is a sick country if M.S., Felos, Greer, the Medical Examiner, and others are not brought to justice.

Well, let me ask you this then: Is it common procedure to deny requests for observing an autopsy?

I will also never forget Terri Schindler and her death by dehydration as ordered by the court of George Greer on the word of her "husband."

An atrocity yes. Evil yes. Nazi Germany no. Let's stick to what happened here and make sure it does not happen again.

As I said, it is tasteless. Besides, from everything I've read and seen, Hitler in the early 30's when running for chancellor pretty much telegraphed his intentions. He would rant against Jews even well before ever coming to power. Unfortunately, most people did not take it seriously. To compare that to anything happening in our country at this point is just so foolish and it defeats your own arguments, if you have any.

Nevertheless, there should be a clamoring for a complete investigation of the entire Schiavo case, from the time of her marrying him to the end of her tragic life.

I've never heard of guest examiners for any case.

They observe an autopsy often!

Yep, I agree completely. Something in this case stinks and demands a full investigation. This, however grotesque, falls short of Nazi Germany and our arguments lose effect when compared to the horrors of the Holocaust complete with horrendous photos of condemned Jews and Nazi flags.

We need to fight for Terri's legacy without those images. It was a horror enough by itself. And more effective as a rallying cry minus the Nazi crap.

There was no effort here to exterminate a race of people.

Hitler did not start out exterminating the Jews. Perhaps you were unaware?

He first, so quietly we hadn't a clue - after all, look how many years AFTER he WAS exterminating Jews before we knew or admitted it!

Before that, he systematically put to death the handicapped, the metnally ill, the seriously ill...they were imperfect and a drag on society.

From there, it was easier to escalate into killing the undesirable - He swore to kill ALL Poles (to get the land) all gypsies, homosexuals and Jews...and anyone who went against him. (Once you start killing, killing gets easier...)

But it started with killing the handicapped...Step 1 is followed by step 2 - 3-4 etc

We who know history, know the patterns. We want to stop this at step 1 - and Terri is hardly the first one. There have been many - Terri's is just the second case that gained widespread publicity because of the court fight by the families

"George Santayana, a notable philosopher, coined the phrase, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

"I am Jewish and am very sensitive to the comparisons. They are over the top and do more to defeat our cause then help it. Stick to the horrors we have here and stay away from the "slippery slope." It is not persuasive and does not help."

What the hell is the matter with you? The "slippery slope" starts with one snowflake.

You ,as a Jew, should understand this!

The ME must be incompetent. Otherwise, they would have extended professional courtesy to the Schindler's forensic pathologist,

Incompetent or complicit?

that county has all the earmarks of a good ole southern county ruled by a cabal of 'one hand washes..." boys
