I also heard, a few days ago, the Introit from the Requiem Mass (in Latin) being chanted. Wonder if they're going to use Latin for the Funeral Mass?

You've hit something there...

The Chant is a reminder that this Church did not begin with Vatican II. Most of the very simple Chants (e.g., Mass XVII/XVIII) melodies were snatched from synagogues or the Temple.

There are studies (I can't verify the accuracy) which tell us that monks who use Chant regularly live longer...

Wonder if they're going to use Latin for the Funeral Mass?

With Piero Marini running the liturgy, who knows? Maybe the Pope specified what he wanted at his Funeral Mass? Or maybe the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis is very specific.

The melodies of the Chaldean daily office are the same as the synagogue psalter tones in the days of Jesus and these tones illustrate Gregorian and pre-Gregorian chant have this same synagogue worship rootedness. Some of the same can be said for part of the Octoechos of the East.

A lot of the cardinals/bishops/priests/laity don't care for her because she is uncompromisingly loyal to the Magisterium.

Mahony did his best to get rid of her and EWTN--there's still a pending Canonical suit he filed against her, at the bottom of a VERY deep pile in the Vatican.

They may rule on the suit in 2095 or so...

The USCC tried to set up its own TVnetwork and bump EWTN from cable-providers (e.g., Time/Warner in Milwaukee) and got bombed by the subscribers who demanded that EWTN be kept on.

I wonder how many people are watching the traditional Catholic wake and funeral of John Paul II and those memories of lost visual and auditory beauty come flooding back?

Many, I'm sure. I know I was taken back in time.

But does anyone know why they were not dressed in some type of vestments?

They were laymen.

Do you miss it when you compare it to your local parish?

They were laymen.

I knew that. I was wondering why not part of the clergy were pallbearers.

OMG.

Coffee...engage...now...

I was wondering why they were not using clergy as pallbearers, as opposed to having laymen in that position.

Yes, and I said to a friend on the phone right after witnessing this amazing procession that I wish we had a nearby parish that celebrated the Mass in Latin. She agreed and offered an idea that I liked very much: Why couldn't parishes offer the Mass in Latin once a month?

I am going to bring this up at my church.

I saw you or someone mention upthread about felt banners and such. Complete agreement here. I also have been dismayed at the repositioning of the altar and so on.

I do not see a return to a communion rail ever. The logistics of such...

I just cannot miss the final goodbye.

Does anyone know which Cardinal has been given charge of the pope's funeral? Or did the Holy Father pre-select the music and readings?

I think I read that the Holy Father had planned his funeral a long time ago. But I've not had actual word from the Vatican for some reason. ;-)
