I actually believe if we can get people to really understand what is happening here - that it is not just those "pathetic tobacco addicts" we may get somewhere.

But there are still so many people that do not believe it is going to happen to them.

Data manipulation is the most dangerous tactic they use. They do this stuff by manipulating the media.............the media is lazy and won't bother looking far beyond the little info and lots of frilly words of a press release.

The media, even the so-called medical/science reporters know so little about basic epidemiology and statistics as to be useless. But the nannyists rely on this and can basically make any claim they want as long as it is anti-cause du jour and the media takes it as gospel and runs with it - no matter how farfetched or outright false.

We have to avoid falling into their divide and conquer trap - which is exactly how they accomplished smoking bans.

I'm trying not to let it go that way.

We are all falling into the nannyist divide and conquer trap.......we have to avoid that at all costs.

I'm just as guilty as the next guy - but if we stay focused on stopping the nannies and work together toward that goal we can succeed in running them out of town on a rail.

Report: Tobacco Taxes Drive Obesity

Guess what? People are getting fatter – and developing more diseases and health problems – because they don’t smoke.

And government taxes on tobacco may be contributing to the weight problem.

Thank you.

I get so tired of that mantra about costing everyone else when I pay more for car, health, and homeowners insurance, the taxes on my smokes, the tobacco settlement through increased prices (which was supposed to go toward smokers' health care costs), etc., etc., etc.

It isn't as if smokers do not pay their own way and then some.

While I would not agree that people not smoking is causing disease, I would agree that increases in tobacco taxes have had a bearing on on obesity rates.

Many people have been taxed out of using tobacco products, and so in seeking a substitute for the habit have resorted to eating more, and generally it is snack food, rather than real meals.

Everyone I know that stopped stopped starting putting on weight and all admit they have found themselves reaching for chips and other snacks more often as something to do.

I rarely smoke if I am reading or writing because it breaks my concentration.....but if I'm sitting in a comfy chair with a good book - I find my hand in the bowl of nuts or chips constantly.

I don't know about making it to 70, but I should make it to 50. I quit smoking, curtailed adult beverages and lost about 50 pounds through exercise and diet change. I sleep better and all those nagging aches and pains went away.
