Minuteman Project to issue major planning statement - Organizers reviewing project's future, direction

April 17, 2005 (Tombstone, AZ)---On Monday, April 18, organizers of the Minuteman Project will be issuing a major statement on the immediate and long-term direction of the project.

Rumors have been circulating that the project might cut short its originally planned month-long monitoring of a 23 mile section of the Arizona-Mexican border by citizen volunteers. The project's cofounders, Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist, said it would be a mistake to think the border will be abandoned. "However, our overwhelming early successes along with more recent developments have caused us to review how best to direct the project the rest of the month and beyond, " Simcox said.

The project has generated national-indeed, worldwide-attention and controversy. President Bush alluded to the project's volunteers as "vigilantes." Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), Chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and an outspoken critic of the president's immigration policies, said the volunteers were "heroes in my book." Tancredo has invited the leaders of the project to travel to Washington DC and report on the project to the members of his caucus.

Project organizers said they have been deluged with messages of support along with requests from citizens of the other border states to organize similar Projects in those states. Gilchrist said all issues would be addressed on Monday. The statement will be issued at 12:30pm in Tombstone from the office of the Tombstone Tumbleweed newspaper, 312 Toughnut Street.

" Virtually everyone is opposed to illegal immigration.
The problem is that if anyone disagrees with you about the solution to illegals, you accuse them of being OBL, which is dishonest.

You favor round-ups, mass deportations, militarizing the border, and building a fence.
I favor a guest worker program."

1. In many of the posts about "roundups" the illegals are already caught. Do you believe in catch and release as is the current policy for illegals, many whom are felons for being in the country?

2. Mass Deportations are a BUSH policy. Probably in repsonse to the Minutemen. Illegals get frequent flyer miles.

3. Militarizing the Border. Well Arizona has 3 military facilities on the border. Doesnt stop them. Wanna see the video?

4. Fence Building. See my comments in #1

Nothing but praise for the MMP on Tancredo's website.

There were articles, but they were rumors?

You would think that Tancredo would ask for retractions if they were only rumors.

MMP is very popular here in the midwest. I've not heard one voice against it.

The Minuteman Project is VERY popular in Cochise County. People see the Minuteman Project volunteers along the highway and they are constantly pulling over to thank them for being there. Many bring cookies, treats, sodas, coffee, doughnuts, and even soup. One resident near an MMP observation post cooked a bunch of them a lobster dinner last night.

County Supervisor Pat Call said in a letter that they've been the "perfect guests" and that he is pleased about the national attention they've brought to the border problem. Today, according to a conversation I had with Jim Gilchrist, Sheriff Larry Dever visited the Bible College to see the MMP and was pleased with the operations. He even gave Jim Gilchrist his signature cowboy hat right off his head and autographed it for him.

I favor a guest worker program.

I'm just curious, are you looking to hire some cheap labor, or are you looking for a job?

I am sure that those are all good subjects but they are tangential.

The real issue is do we allow guest workers into the country or not.

This Tennessean Patriot/Pilot is seriously considering flying one of his airplanes down to the border to help with aerial surveilance. Support here in TN, as far as I've seen, is stong for the MMP.

That is very nice to hear! I am one of many Americans who strongly support these brave and courageous individuals.

I remember reading that Tancredo asking the minutemen stop the project was just a rumor and that he and Gilchrest (not sure which project organizer...) were on the news and Tancredo said it wasn't true he asked them to stop. I would like to know if this is a rumor that Tancredo asked them to stop or if he truly did this. I'm really looking to support Tancredo, however if he did wuss out, I'd like to know.

Why do your "guest workers" have to be illegals?

You act like favoring a guest worker plan is fringe. The reality is that most favor a guest worker plan.

Do know how many different guest workers programs this country has?

No "Guest Workers" until they take care of the illegals in country now, which obviously they are not.

This is 2005. Guest workers are not needed for row crops. There have been machines for harvesting row crops and orchards for at least 30 years. The answer to agricultural shortages is automated equipment.

Americans can perform all of the labor that the illegals do.

If folks cannot be secure in their persons and property now - how will a "guest worker" program solve the issues of crime, education, medical care, and social security for the illegals here already? Just whitewash the ones here already with amnesty?

The US cannot afford that luxury.

You're letting the quislings mess with you. Tancredo declared the Minuteman Project an overwhelming success. He said that they could close it down right now because they had already proved their point and they were already highly successful. He said now it was time for Gilchrist and Simcox to come to Washington and talk to Congress and describe their stunning success.

The quislings want to paint it as if Tancredo turned against the MMP and wants it shut down, or that public support has turned against it, or a whole bunch of other stupid lies. Don't fall for it.

By my count, there 7 guest worker plans in congress that would convert illegals to guest workers. Could be more.

Is there some way the Minutemen could each donate a small piece of vertebrae - just enough to make one complete spine - to send to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC?

Viola! Just like that. So, the ones hanging out on street corners hoping to get picked up would be sent home. The gang bangers ( that isn't a real job, after all) would be sent home, too? What's to prevent the feds from doing it, now? Nothing. That's what will happen after any "plan" is put in place, too. Nothing.

You and the open borders folks are in the minority and on the losing side of this issue.

How about showing a fence down the St.Lawrence River and for good measure just a snow fence from Vermont to Maine.
