NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - CNN correspondent Judy Woodruff will leave the network and daily journalism when her contract expires in June.
Woodruff has worked at the network's Washington bureau for 12 years and hosts the weekday afternoon ``Inside Politics.'' Woodruff said she will work on several long-form projects, as well as teach and write. She'll also appear occasionally on CNN.
``I am exploring/discussing several long-form television projects,'' Woodruff said Thursday afternoon. ``Nothing I can announce yet. But I'm very excited about what is possible.''
CNN President Jon Klein said Thursday that the network had offered Woodruff a new contract and several ``meaningful'' roles but that she decided against re-upping full-time.
``Judy just decided that 30 years was plenty for day-to-day journalism,'' Klein said.
Klein praised Woodruff and said that he was glad she wasn't going to leave CNN completely.
``She is in the top tier of political journalists,'' he said.
It isn't clear what will happen to ``Inside Politics'' after Woodruff leaves. CNN has made no secret of the fact that it wants to alter the way politics is covered; with the departure of Tucker Carlson late last year, Klein said he was considering canceling ``Crossfire,'' which airs after ``Inside Politics'' weekday afternoons.
``It's all part of our fundamental rethink of how we cover politics today,'' Klein said. Ideas range from continuing its current level to completing overhauling the political-coverage schedule, although Klein stressed that CNN wasn't going to reduce its coverage of politics in any event.
Klein promised decisions soon.
Woodruff praised the staff of ``Inside Politics.''
``I've been blessed to have worked with an incredible team of talented people who know politics inside out,'' she said. ``And I'm so proud of what we've done together on 'Inside Politics' over the past 12 years.''
At CNN as well as PBS and NBC earlier in her career, Woodruff has covered politics and has covered every political campaign since 1976. In 1988, she moderated the famous debate between vice presidential candidates Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen.
She joined CNN in 1993, after a career at PBS that included the position of chief Washington correspondent for ``The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour.'' She was the host of ``Frontline'' from 1984 to 1990.
Woodruff also covered the White House for NBC between 1977 and 1982, as well as working as Washington correspondent for ``Today'' and as a general assignment reporter based in Atlanta, where she joined NBC News in 1975.
Well at least they're gonna "re-think " Here's a clue CNN: Just report what you actually know---ALL OF IT. Shut the HEdouble hockeysticks up about what you THINK. You've demonstrated nobody gives a rip about what you think. EVIDENCE: the last four elections you've tried to swing. Didn't work, wasn't prudent and Ted had to sell off his Buffalo herd. Endangered species: CNN, dodo birds et al.
A few years back "Inside Politics" was on while I read the paper. My ears perked up when Judy asked Ted Kennedy about a fact being discussed on talk radio, namely that the Republican proposals on taxes were nearly identical to what JFK proposed 40 years earlier. Great question, since Teddy was, of course, claiming they would cause the end of civilization as we know it. He blathered uncomfortably for a couple minutes without remotely answering the question. Judy asked no followup and eagerly moved on to something inane. Journalist?...hardly. I haven't watched her since.
she kinda looks like Catherine Crier in that pic. Like a harda$$.
CNN=rethinks future coverage in WOLVES clothing....hmmm! :0}
I agree. When FOX News, as opposed to FOX commentary, covers the news, it does truly present the facts as good news men are expected to do. They don't approach the news with innuendo and a sneer. I think Brit Hume is the best news man and news manager in the business.
CNN=rethinks future coverage in WOLVES clothing....hmmm! :0}
AH DANG! Got that wrong, it's SHEEP's clothing...darn it!
She'll wind up at an Ivy League college like Columbia and "teach", just like old Algore did. Judy will look good in a beard I'm sure and it will cover up that neck everyone is talking about.
Well it couldn't get worse... thats for sure..
Wrong..she turned down a new contract.she figures she might get the CBS gig, or the Today show..or on ABC..sh'e playing it smart..
They call it "FOX " News for a reason!
Rats leaving a sinking ship? Maybe the rodents will start to leave, too.
Strange, isn't it, how simple questions even from liberal friendly journalists can sink ol' Ted. It reminds me of that incisive question put to the old alcoholic by Roger Muddd in 1980, "Why do you want to be president?"
I sometimes wonder if that relatively innocent question didn't cost Mudd the anchor job that Rather got.
I'll send a box of crayons.
Bernie retired, Judy was fired!
I suggest they tell more lies. 'Course, I'm not their friend.
