Rick Rodriguez: Griego Erwin resigns amid internal inquiry into her columns By Rick Rodriguez -- Bee Executive Editor Published 2:15 am PDT Thursday, May 12, 2005

Diana Griego Erwin, whose column has appeared in this space three days a week, resigned Wednesday amid an internal inquiry into whether some people mentioned in several recent columns actually existed.

During our inquiry we found we could not authenticate the existence of several people even though they were identified by name, age and sometimes by the neighborhoods in which they were reported to have lived. We used extensive online database searches as well as old-fashioned shoe-leather work in our investigation over the past 2 1/2 weeks.

Such a good liberal activist, I hate to see her go. Oh wait, I canceled the Bee 5 years ago. Never mind.

What did Ms. Erwin claim that these non-existent people were doing or saying?

With all these "journalists" getting caught doing everything from making up facts to making up people to respond to those facts, I've got to figure this is institutionalized.

Is this something journalist schools are teaching?

Or they learning it from journalism retreats, like the kind Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden used to hold for activists?

Journalism, MSM, broadcast and print need to do some serious introspective housecleaning.

These kinds of events (journalist canned or quit because of lies and deceptions) are becoming too common. How many MSM outlets have had such problems recently?

Journalism needs to review its code of ethics and journalistic organizations need to start enforcing them --- or MSM will lose any credibility it may still have.

Not enough news. Journalists need to report on stories, or
"invent" them in order to have words to write..

Too much money in news...to many people competing...
too many liars...

It's always true, that once any enterprise starts making money
you can expect all the liars, hucksters, hustlers,
etc. to start cashing in on it...and the quality soon
goes down.....

I always had a bit of suspicion regarding her "writing".

It seemed an amazing coincidence that, whomever she interviewed, always had a heart wrenching sob story that, coincidently, parroted the Democratic Party Talking Points.

All a big coincidence I'm sure.

On another note, a few years ago, the Sacramento News and Review, the local "freebie" paper had their usual Halloween issue in which they did a parody of the Bee.

In it, Griego's picture was replaced by one of a Standard Poodle, with floppy curly hair and the same winsome look she has in her real picture.

It was a classic, and I have never been able to look at her pic quite the same way again....

Cheers,

in a handful of cases - too many by far - we found we could not verify [the sources'] existence.

I'd like to know just how many sources were apparently fabricated. On the one hand the editor claims it was a "handful." On the other, the number of such cases was "too many by far." Just how many were there?

Another graduate of the Jayson Blair whacked out wetdreams becoming so called news gets her just deserts.

She and Mary Mapes are just the tip of the iceberg of lying/whacked Jayson Blair graduates pretending to be reporters.

What did Ms. Erwin claim that these non-existent people were doing or saying?

Typically they were tear-jerker real person stories. Usually it involved someone down on their luck who is suffering even more due to Republican policies. Or it might be a story about a brave abortion nurse, or a dedicated enviro-whacko -- that kind of stuff.

You must have an incredible high pain threshold to have read enough of big hair's columns to know what they are about. I could never make it past the second sentence.

She should have been fired a long time ago for bad writing. This kind of makes my day.

Newsrooms today are dominated by the Left, with the secular church of American liberalism always holding services among the faithful. Newspapers consequently lack the intellectual vigor and personal give and take that inhibit and expose fraud and fabrication.

No matter how strong the need for newspapers to have aggressive, self-declared conservative editors and reporters to keep newsrooms honest, America's newspapers are fundamentally incapable of embracing the remedy. Most are like late stage heart patients who continue to smoke and do not take their medication -- but are genuinely surprised at the painful evidence of their continued decline.

The only thing papers sell is their integrity. If you can't trust what they say, they've got nothing. In the short run it's going to be hard for the MSM to clean up corrupt deadwood - in the long run it's their only hope.

Sacramento Bee columnist quits amid inquiry

The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO (AP) - A Sacramento Bee columnist resigned in the midst of the newspaper's investigation into whether she fabricated some of the people she mentioned in several recent columns, the newspaper said in Thursday editions.

Diana Griego Erwin, who won a Pulitzer Prize and George Polk award while working at the Denver Post in the 1980s, came to The Bee 12 years ago.

"During our inquiry we found we could not authenticate the existence of several people even though they were identified by name, age and sometimes by the neighborhoods in which they were reported to have lived," Executive Editor Rick Rodriguez wrote in the space usually reserved for Griego Erwin's three-day-a-week column. "When asked to provide confirmation ... she was unable to do so to our satisfaction."

Griego Erwin maintained her innocence even while resigning for personal reasons, Rodriguez said. She said in a statement that, "I did nothing wrong, but could not fully prove that to The Bee."

In addition to her awards while at the Denver Post, she won the American Society of Newspaper Editors award for best column writing in 1990 while at the Orange County Register along with other awards at The Bee.

Rodriguez noted her resignation "comes at a time when the news industry has been hit with a series of high-profile ethical lapses in print and broadcast. And this kind of unfortunate story can't help but cut into our credibility."

He said readers are rightly demanding more accountability and the paper is determined to maintain their trust.

He said more cases are becoming known in part because the authenticity of sources is easier to verify. In Griego Erwin's case, he said a handful of individuals named in recent columns couldn't be confirmed, after an inquiry into a single column began more than two weeks ago.

Pulitzer and Nobel prizes used to convey an air of excellence and dedication to revealing truths in science and history and honoring tose who help make this a better world.

But then the NYT, LAT, WaPost etc lost their way and bought into the "How can we be wrong" mentality? "We ARE the news, aren't we?"

Yes,, sadly You are the news .. again and again, as the agendas of the loonie left and their practititoners surface and choke them on their own vomit.

Puke Day? Everyday is Puke Day!

OH and a big Thanks to CBS for confirming the worse suspicions again. Totally corrupt.

Here's an example. Wonder how many of those quoted are imaginary. Notice the gratuitous Schwarzeneggar dig at the end as well.

Another fairly representative story. Nowhere does it say that the guy should have paid his bills or made some effort at all to deal with the problem.
