I know how much we all want to support our side. I know that many of us are looking for something good in what happened tonight. Sadly, an honest assessment will result in a single conclusion, that tonight the Republican Senate failed the nation, in order to protect themselves from having to take a vote that would determine the future Presidential ambitions of some Senators.
Do not blame the 12 moderates, because we already knew that they could not be trusted. Do not blame the President, and tonight, you cannot even blame the Democrats. Their side did their job, which was to win. Our side did not. I am not posting this to bash the Republican Party, I am posting this, because I already see some of us looking for the silver lining in this turd. Do not do that. Face the reality of the situation, which is that Senators care about Senators. Bill Frist had ample opportunity to change Senate rules prior to the formation of the 109th Congress. He also had ample opportunity to pull the trigger weeks, even months ago. He did not, which is why I said in an earlier post, that would not vote for Frist for President no matter the outcome of events.
Unfortunatly, we have no recourse. We cannot give up the Senate in an attempt to punish the Senate Republicans. We cannot afford to cut off our noses to spite our faces. But the time will come, where we will have a chance to make our voices heard. Not tonight, not 2006 but maybe by 2008 we will have the voice, the organization, and the attention of enough minds to truly punish the Senate for what they did tonight.
Keep your powder dry, and wait for these folks to come into range. Save your ammo for now. But one day, we will make them pay.
Enjoy your happiness, loser!
No one has ever satisfactorily explained to me why the (pre)-Pubs don't just make the 'rats ACTUALLY FILIBUSTER. Make them talk, the second they yield the floor, call a vote. YTF is this so hard?
Great question.
Moderates are scared of conservatives. More scared of conservatives than liberals.
Regarding olympia snow, I am thinking of a particularly choice greek two work phrase, The fist starts with "k" the second with "p". Unfortunatly FR rules prevent the posting of it.
If Frist has some self respect, the senate should start to dry up the "baccon" for the republican cabal of cowards.
McCain must pay a HUGE price in being unable to produce for his state.
Just like the SCOTUS was going to declare CFR constitutional? Oops -- they didn't.
I'm in agreement. While it might have been emotionally satisfying to see the nuclear option detonated this week, it's important to get as much as we can without using it. The best reason it can be called the "nuclear" option is that it works best as a deterrent, rather than as an actually used weapon.
I'm upset about the RINOs, too, but we have to face the fact that a RINO from a blue state is better than a Rat from a blue state. What we need to get are true conservatives from the red states, starting with Arizona.
How about 2006? Any of these RINOs up for re-election then?
Nah, not raped or diddled. I think we got an unwelcome grope or maybe a french kiss. Maybe even a wedgie.
I totally agree,McCain has to be defeated.A message needs to be sent.
How can you be so sure about that?
I'll side with you on that so I don't go postal(metaphorically speaking).
This is the "Curse of the Mehlman". Ever since Ken Mehlman replaced Ed Gillespie The GOP hit a rough patch. You can't make this stuff up
Didn't sheets Byrd write the new rule from 67 to 60 votes to break the filibuster back in the seventies. Hell when Dashole was leader 60 votes were needed for everything.
One thing you can count on from our republican representatives is that they are gutless and will cave every time to the democrats, just once I would love to see them stand up and follow through to the finish.
Do not be silly.
Of course I blame them, McCain in particular. Ya blame the ones that do the deed. Otherwise your blame makes no sense.
You present an apples to oranges comparison.
As Frist said tonight...ALL options are still on the table. And, the "compromise" supports that.
All that's changed is we now deserve an explanation from the Dimms as to why they have gone back on their word if they choose to filibuster.
War is hell. And, if we stay vigilant, we will win this one.
Fact is, the Moderates will vote against Filibuster no matter what happens. If the Dems lie it wont matter. By making this deal, we have destroyed our leverage. Had the Moderates remained silent, Frist would have the leverage to threaten the rule change. Dems now know that they can do whatever they want, because John McCain and Lindsey Graham want to be Pres and Veep with Moderate and liberal votes because they cant get them from Conservatives under any circumstances.
