But that's just a short step from government by referendum, which absolutely leads to demagogic tyranny. The Checks and Balances in the system are partly there to protect it from the insanity of democracy. As I see it, there is no way around the problem, once we have to resort to direct referendum, the Republic has failed.
The ultimate check and balance is a new government by revolution.

Thom, you have discounted the tremendous spin by the Rat favoring media that keeps the average Joe in the dark.
The Dims came off as huge winners this week. The Dims don't care about looking like fools, because they know their media shills will spin it to their advantage. And the Dims cannot be counted on to honor any so-called agreement.
If this is poker, it isn't being played very well. Two judges are now in limbo that should have gotten a vote.
The principle that a President's nominees have a right to be voted on has been lost for the time being.
The Dims need to be put down, politically speaking, on this issue.
And I'm still waiting for a Republican, poker playing or not, that has the balls to do it.

Group with Houghton ties raised money from Bush critic

Amo Houghton, has pocketed $50,000 from George Soros -- one of President Bush's harshest critics -- even as the GOP tries to stop the liberal billionaire from helping Democratic-leaning groups pay for anti-Bush ads.
The Soros connection has put Houghton on the spot at home. Conservative Mark Assini, a Rochester-area county legislator hoping to challenge the veteran congressman in a GOP primary this fall, accuses Houghton of betraying Bush and the Republican Party by "partnering" with Soros.
But there are also questions about whether groups such as the Republican Main Street Partnership, the organization that Houghton helped establish and now finances, should use different entities to raise "soft money," unlimited amounts of unregulated cash from corporations, labor unions and wealthy individuals like Soros.
And do what? Set up the same system all over again? Any revolution will have to be a popular movement, which means greater democracy, which means in the long run more socialism just as in Europe.
And George Allen has what it takes in '08.
