Compromising Senators must have the mistaken impression that once Brown and Owen go up to the Circs, the libdems will "love them" and wont oppose their promotions to the Supremes. That strategy worked magnificently with Bork, Thomas, Scalia didnt it?

we still need to get to 60, or as close to 60 as possible, in 2006. This means: winning in Nebraska etc

Allowing Nebraska Dem Sen Nelson credit for this compromise just guaranteed his re-election in 06; Nelso thus avoided voting on the nuclear option and compromising his "prolife" stance here in Nebraska. NIce Job RINO Sens

we still need to get to 60, or as close to 60 as possible, in 2006.

Would that matter? What have the Republicans done with the 55 we gave them this election?

The Republicans need to prove now that they:
(1) are committed to actually enacting a conservative agenda and not are just talking about it, and
(2) are willing and able to discipline its dissident members to prevent them from subverting that agenda.

Without those, no number of nominally "Republican" Senators will ever be adequate. They'll be telling you in 2007 to give more money so that they can get the 67 Senators they need to accomplish something.

My message to GOP "leadership":
- No more "bait and switch"
- No more talk without action
Show me now that you are worthy of my support. Not tomorrow. Now.

Confirm every single one of the nominated judges. No exceptions, no excuses.

Democrats... 1 step backwards, 3 steps forward..

Republicans... 2 steps backwards, followed by 1 more step backwards.. for good measure.. so nobody is confused.

**Result- Unilateral withdrawal..

From this point on, it is hereby decreed that these seven Republican weiniemeisters are to be hereby referred to as the "Neville Chamberlain Republicans"

Yesterday, we were ready to do battle, but the rug has been pulled out from under us. Now, I have an idea how the Czech soldiers felt the morning after the Munixh Agreement was signed.

Well said. You hit the heart of the matter. These are Republicans, not conservatives. They don't have a political philosophy. They don't have a moral framework. They don't give a tinker's damn about anything but reelection. Remind you of, say, a President in the last decade of the last century?

How about the Neville Chamberlain RINOs? I resist calling them Republicans. They are appeasers and pseudo-RATs.

Pardon my lack of manners--but thank you both for posting those great pictures on this thread. The image of Neville C. was exactly what was in my mind when I started the thread.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Following on this theme, if it is true that the democrats can't be reasoned with, just like Nazis, then democracy is dead.

The co-operative nature of bi-partisanship has died. The lockstep with which the Democratic party moves and the vile rhetoric spoken by their leaders is appalling.

And certainly evokes the images of 1930s Germany and the rise of fanatical National Socialism there.

I have to say what I never thought I would: looking over the events from 1993 to date, the Democrats do not care for America and are trying to tear it apart.

They need to suffer the fate of the Whigs--political extinction as a major party.

What's the point? Since this is a recurring theme, and since it usually takes the form of classism or enfranchisement ---> radical partisanship, (as Plato predicted); I say just consign the whole system to the ash heap. After all, since you can't have national socialism, or communist socialism without democratic republicanism, it's logical to assume that the last leads to one or the other of those horrible outcomes. And given the history of democracy, both in Europe and here, it is arguably an inevitable evolution (or devolution). The system doesn't work, it's not organic. The artificial checks and balances are finally braking down it seems.

A most erudite response. We are not at the point of discarding the system. But,this system we have must be fought for, for it to work. And the Pubbies are not rising to the challenge yet.

The people remain the ultimate check and balance and reserve that right to themselves.

To your tagline, we must be true--Freepers are quixotics at heart.
