LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The rock band Nine Inch Nails said on Friday it canceled plans to appear on next week's MTV Movie Awards after the network questioned the band's plans to perform in front of an image of President Bush.
The band was slated to perform "The Hand That Feeds," the first single from its latest album.
A Los Angeles Times review called the song "a warning against blind acceptance of authority, including that of a president leading his nation to war."
"We were set to perform 'The Hand That Feeds' with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop. Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me," Nine Inch Nails' leader Trent Reznor said in a statement posted on the band's Web site.
MTV said in a statement: "While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards."
MTV is owned by Viacom Inc., the corporate parent of broadcast network CBS.
MTV has always been more "fair & balanced" than most of the MSM. Amazing, but politically this is true. They know that 1/2 their audience (approximately) voted FOR Bush.
The band is probably having drug problems and it is just another case of "Bush's Fault "..... ;)
Know doubt that on left wing web sites they will interpret this as another example of the government under republican leadership censoring free speech.
Nice to know they have some sense of balance.
(Or in your case, shut up and wail / whine / screech. You're so 90's / you're so past-tense.)
I would've let Nine Inch Nails do their thing. It's America. Music is art. It's the MTV Movie Awards, and I doubt very seriously that very many die-hard Bush supporters will be watching crap like that anyway. I would hope we all have better taste than to consume what Hollywood is manufacturing these days.
Or respect for the market :)
I always thought they were very good on the pro-life issue. Most media, if they show a pro-life person, go out of their way to find some elderly, white-male, religious fanatic and present that as the face of the pro-life movement.
MTV, otoh, will find young, good looking pro-lifers and put them on the tube.
They interviewed my own brother, who was very good looking, and homosexual, and pro-life and put him on the tube during the 1992 Dem Convention in NYC. And they were courteous enough to messenger him over a tape of the show when he called the next day to inquire. A friend of his had seen him on TV, my brother didn't even know he'd made the cut.
We still have that tape, and it is very nice to have, since my poor brother has gone to his reward.
So, I got a soft spot in my heart for MTV, but I will say I thought they were very even handed (esp. in comparison!) on this issue long before.
Their unwillingness to set Bush up for a bashing fits in with that.
That's the problem, I suspect. Their market is shrinking, not growing. And if you tick off a lot of would-be customers from the start, it doesn't bode well for your chances to expand.
Most Lyrics suck just like the band these are no different !
Nine Inch Nails
The Hand That Feeds
You're keeping in step
In the line
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
Because you do
What you're told
But inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold
Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?
What if this whole crusade's
A charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood
On which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine
Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?
So naive
I keep holding on to what I want to believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on
Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees? [8X]
I've voted for the person over the party my entire life. Only since Bush was elected in 2000 has my opinion changed.
I've found a new method. I check all the boxes with an 'R' next to them, and I'm not voting Reform Party.
I credit people like Trent Reznor for my new voting style.
I dont think that is true.
All kids don't watch MTV. It has too much ghetto rap and plays more to the gangsta wanna-be's.
My kids prefer VH1 and sometimes tune to CMT.
My perception is that MTV is largely a east-coast-city/suburb fav, and has largely lost much of its status since switching to all rap all the time.
Sorry to hear about your brother's passing.
Wow! Bush-bashing! That's really original. And soooo rebellious, too! Rock-and-roll is so dangerous!
If there's any justice in the universe, the only thing Trent Reznor will be remembered for is writing "Hurt" - you know, that great Johnny Cash song.
No kidding - a nearly 40 year old man dressed in leather pants and fishnet arm stockings, screeching into a microphone about how debased and perverted he is.
Wow. His parents must be danged proud of him!
Get a real job, Trent - you're not impressing anyone.
Probably because the mindless masses of leftists watching MTV would boo and hiss it reflexively. Irony or subtlety is not their style. Anything less than NIN throwing elephant dung on the picture would be met with shock! horror! that it was even shown.
Ditto to that !!
