(05/26/05 -- DURHAM) There's no confirmation that the Ku Klux Klan was involved in any of the cross burnings Wednesday night in Durham. But Eyewitness News has uncovered evidence that the KKK is still active in our area.
A federal law enforcement source tells Eyewitness News that agents are talking with people who are connected to local hate groups, hoping to get some fresh leads in Wednesday's cross burnings. It's not clear if the Klan itself is responsible or some other group.
The source said the burnings are a very high law enforcement priority and every available resource is being put into the investigation.
Authorities are increasingly concerned about hate groups engaging in what they call domestic terrorism.
James Wickstrom considers himself the "grand chaplain" of the Aryan Nations. Federal officials say his calls to action are similar to those of Osama bin Laden.
In fact, an FBI report obtained by ABC News identifies 22 groups as domestic terror organizations. Those groups are the focus of 338 active FBI field investigations.
Officials say fewer people are showing up in person for meetings and cross burnings. Instead, the Internet has become the principal recruitment tool for hate groups.
Eyewitness News has also learned that many hate groups operating in the western United States, especially in California and Idaho, are working to recruit young people in the South.
I was thinking the same thing.
If they were "very active", we'd have heard much more about it by now. Every L/MSM outlet in the universe would have sent a team in to do an "on the scene!" report.
Sounds more like a reporter blowing smoke. Oh, excuse me, the preess NEVER LIES.
Let's follow the money. The Durham board of executioners will have to decide exactly how much money to pour into the area.
With the Wachovia extortion hustle, IMO Durham is being shaken by the (money) trunk - and I don't think the shaker's are wearing white.
The KKK and white supremacists are the biggest pack of pathetic losers infesting society today. They're buried, all right, in their own hate, which alone gives distinction to their bottomhugging lives. When all you've got going for you is the pale shade of your own miserable hide, you're a certified loser.
BTW, the Klan can obtain a permit and march anywhere, anytime. They are not legally banned from parading in their ridiculous robes. But on the rare occasion when they do appear, the turnout is pathetic. This `feared racist underground movement' has to be protected by the police.
I once knew a co-worker from Deep Yankeeland (he is a Bwoston Masshole) who was convinced that it is dangerous to publicly criticize the KKK here in South Carolina.
Yes, there are individuals who carry racism locked up inside their skulls. What, if anything, do they ever do about it?
BTW, I'm a rockhard Reagan Republican. Sorry if anything in the above could be construed as liberal. Conservatives hate the KKK, too.
I have to take exception, liberals love the KKK, it is the only political offence they have left in the south. If it wern't for the KKK, and the fear associated with it, they would never get the southern black vote.
"In fact, an FBI report obtained by ABC News identifies 22 groups as domestic terror organizations. Those groups are the focus of 338 active FBI field investigations."
Typical media projecting here. The reporter ASSUMES the "hate groups" are white and KKK. There may well be 22 groups -- 21 Islamic, black, Mexican, whatever, and 1 white group. But somehow the media assumes if it's hate, it's white.
The couple of KKK rallies I protested in my hometown must've been my imagination.
The KKK is still very active in the United States Senate also.
Why no mention of this by either the Feds or main stream media?
OK, I reached the end of this thread.
My only consolation is that the State of Denial will produce a whopping number of electoral votes for the 2008 Republican candidate.
The article didn't have much in the way of information, did it.
There's no confirmation that the Ku Klux Klan was involved... It's not clear if the Klan itself is responsible...
But we'll mention them anyway.
... an FBI report obtained by ABC News identifies 22 groups as domestic terror organizations.
... the Internet has become the principal recruitment tool for hate groups.
... many hate groups operating in the western United States, especially in California...
And the names of these hate groups are?
LOL!! Sure it is. I can't tell you how many Klan meetings I see or hear about every weekend. Heck, I just found out from an 'informed' source on this very website they're walking around the circle in the center of my town. When in fact, it's almost been literally decades since I've seen one of those idiots in hoods or their counterparts.
Just more bad reporting from WTVD. Of course that's what I've come to expect from that television station.
I saw 3 in 1975.
They were being roundly jeered by the citizens of Buchanan, Ga.
Saying the Feds are full of sh*t in this case , would be over simplification. The Fed's are just as aware as the rest of us are, that if the KKK was spotted owls it would be number one on the endangered species list. Yes number one and being a baby eating predator has never kept any other species from it's rightful place on that list.
The KKK serves the guvment so well with it's reputation as a despised and feared boogie man, to distract our attention away from the real demons that genuinely threaten us,whom the government either out of fear or because of complicity therein, wishes to ignore- and unlike Teri Schiavo, will be forever kept on life support by the Feds, despite it's obvious permanent vegitative state.

Exactly.
The Communist Party USA finally collapsed when all the FBI agents stopped paying their dues. If they and the ATF would drop out of the Klan, it would shrink to complete impotence.

As a North Carolina native, I can tell you that this is BULLSH!T at best and fearmongering at worst.
Very active?
I'm sure they have a good number of members, but that getting together for a secret "WE hate everybody but us meeting" doesn't equate to "active".
I've seen mega churches that aren't active.
I'll bet there were more protesters at the KKK rallies you protested then there were KKK members. Whats left of the KKK is just a bunch of lame brain half wit societal misfits looking for attention. I wouldn't worry about them.
